They are very rich but still receive support from the public purse..... many would say that makes them scroungers

Some numbers, seeing as you can't be bothered to look. The Queen receives £43 million, yet the privy purse returned £304 million, which included taxes at 45%(£4.48mill) from Charles.

And then there's the benefits they bring in from tourism, charities and exports.

Scroungers? Open your eyes from the rubbish you read in the papers.

Brian... we spend many, many millions on them.... yet no one can justify that with how much they earn us. Also.... seeking democracy is not being left-wing.... though its not an uncommon accusation.

The numbers spent on them is well documented, as is the return which is way way more. And you're right, no one can give a number for what they bring in on top of a return which is over 6 times what is spent. 6 times! Do you need a justification for a return of £304 million against what is paid out? A little bit of research will show that the Royal family pays tax at the going rate on all earnings from their businesses.

As for democracy, her position as head of state is as a figured head. There's pomp around it but she has no power at all. Unelected she may be but she has even less power than the House of Lords - Cromwell, and latterly Tony Blair, sorted that out.

She is an employee of the state and returns way more than is spent. Do you know anyone else who does?

But if you do want to target a Royal scrounger, target Andrew. Charles has clipped his wings twice this year that I can remember. Once for excessive use of the Royal flight, and once for asking for a Royal protection detail for his daughters.

I'm actually not a Royalist, and I don't expect it to continue in its current guise for much longer. From my perspective, the numbers indicate the benefit. If you can't or won't accept them, fine. I agree, what got the Royal family to the position they're in when the average man on the street survived on bread and dripping was wholly wrong. Times have moved on. However, the Royal family of 50 years ago in terms of privilege isn't the Royal family of today. Yes they've got the grand houses etc but if you think a 90 year old doing over 300 engagements, and a 68 year old doing over 500 engagements, and a 66 year old doing over 550 engagements, and returning over £300 million to the Treasury is wrong... I'm just sorry you can't see beyond what might have once have been a valid view but is also past its sell by date.
