Rugby school

The players may have gone to a top public school, I would bet none of them paid full fees. They’re all on some kind of scholarship, if you’re decent at rugby you get a decent education. Owen Farrell went to a decent school & he’s from Wigan 😱 there may be an unhealthy fixation from the RFU on school attended but it’s nothing compared to the unnecessary use of initials in the programme

Most of the players would have started out of the public school system, but are bought in on scholarships as the competition to be the best rugby school is always high.

Quite why the Rfu still print the school info in the programme is a strange one, as people don’t care as much as when it was an amateur sport.

As for those slagging off rugby, I would personally hope that my 2 sons take up rugby over football any day of the week and I love watching football! Standing on the sideline of a junior rugby match vs a junior football game gives you all the evidence you need in that regard.

Thought Owen went to John Fisher 😉

I went to school in Wigan we played touch rugby on the tennis courts at break times. Football took second place. League all the way, but we did take on a school from Bath at Union and league. Won both of them.

Not sure it's just rugby. Cricket still seems to put an emphasis on the schools the players went to as well. My school use to be grammar until the late 60's and still retained rugby/cricket fixtures against some of the more elite (fee paying) schools. They were producing some very good players and you could tell they were being coached well and their players were playing in good sides at the weekend.

He did.

I went to a proper rugby school in Wigan. They treated us very well. The senior team even got preferential treatment from the Teachers.

Loved playing rugby at school. Coming from over the border in Lancs I’d never played before going to high school (Standish). Loved it! Great sport, great sportsmanship.

I went to The Deanery. Between us, St Peters and John Fisher we won nearly every major honour through every age group. Then they changed the boundaries and Deanery never recovered.

I believe he had to finish up at a proper school down south. They had to run an intensive course in ‘de northernisation’, to try and make him suitable for the gentleman’s game.
Not sure he finished those classes 😉

Well who would finish when it involves cutting off your balls, removing the frontal lobe and finally removing your sense of humour?
😉

Indeed, a painful but necessary process if you want to be included in the programme at twickers.
You have to add at least 3 initials & expunge all records of ‘st whippets college Oldham’🤣

Slightly off topic, but my daughter found it very odd when she started at her (slightly posh) university. Everyone she knew would ask her what school she went to, and of course none of them had heard of our local comp... She ended up having to tell them the name of our nearest posh school so that they knew where she lived....

Bad move. she would then be told that she must know Torquil St Clair-Dibley-Criton

Isnt it more the case that not many state schools play rugby or cricket anyway?
I did both back in the 80's, but then Maggie allowing the schools to sell off their playing fields didnt help any child.

I have a middle name (but only 1), went to public school and played rugby for both my school and the RAF U21's.

Shall I just paint a big target on my back now??:ROFLMAO:

Deanery?

Makes sense now actually.

Love and kisses from a Rosebridger

Now that was a proper school if you liked Rugby league, sniffing glue and learning how to rob motorbikes 😂

Don't know what you mean. The Deanery was a proper school. We didn't even have to lock our gates to keep the students in!
