While on holiday I decided to have a game of volleyball on the beach and managed to damage my knee meaning I haven't played golf for 5 weeks and am on crutches.

Feels like it is getting better and, hopefully, on Thursday the doc will say I am ok and can go about as normal again.

So, straight in at the deep end, a 36 hole open at Royal Dornoch!

Anyone that has played there, any tips/advice of how to take on this monster? I need all the help I can get!

I pay there quite often as ive a few mates that are members, playing this week as it happens.

Well done for getting in, last time i played it was balloted out at 5.

First thing to look at is the par 3's, two and 6 being the hardest. miss left/right or long you are dead on these. my advice play just short of the front and putt up. the other 2 are fairly straight forward.

Most of the trouble is around the greens, not overly bunkered, they don't need to be, most greens are raised in some way. a good way to know where to hit your tee shots from is to look at Google Earth. All the greens are narrow-ish and all face slightly different angles.

The css is usually quite high, but there are no scabby rounds at RD, you have to play well.

if you would like some more advice, PM your mobile and i will talk you though a few holes if you like

Only played there twice and would echo everything Patrick has said. There are certain absolutely deadly misses, miss 2 even slightly right and it might run into a gorse bush and miss 6 right it might end up 20+ feet below the surface.Have a look at this lovely video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NkMW1ubkMkThen don't spend the rest of the day looking at the courses on that channel ;-)

Tips - take your camera.

The view from behind the (7TH?) white tee back out over the course is a sight to behold.

Thanks for the info folks.

Having watched the video I can see what you mean about the 2nd and 6th Patrick. I take it course management is a big one here? 4 irons off tees where possible, although there are quite a few long par 4s where that isn't an option!

Thanks for the offer, I'll PM you just now.

Tee shots requiring special attention in terms of line and clubbing are 3,8,14 and 17 imo.

8 and 17 have big drop-offs in the landing zone towards the fairway

Would not say a super conservative approach off the tee is required as its not too severe in most cases, the vast majority of the trouble is around the green.

Those mounds right of 14 are a quality hazard, ideally avoid having to play from one of them upslopes against the wind
