Rory McIlroy

Re: Rory McIroy

He did not blow that one,the chinese guy made an unbelievable birdie from the trees to win from he and Molinari,he did the first yes but not the 2nd...even if he had 2 in my book aint several.

I think you are taking very small digs at what peaple have posted back way too seriously, honestly I would see nothing more than banter from what I have read but the abusive pm is different.

Re: Rory McIroy

Oh please Come on Homer the trouser leg thing was banter......

I think it is widely known that me and Homer disagree on most things,I have sent him a PM in the past saying it is not personal but I just come at subjects from a different angle and disagree on a lot of subjects.

Im pretty sure that the "usual suspects" comment is aimed at me and people might think it was aimed at me so I would just like to make it clear I have not sent any PMs to Homer and even though I have recieved abusive PMs in the past I would never do it myself.
I keep getting told that opinions are what this forum are about,in this case you are alone in your opinion,SO WHAT!!

Nasty PMs are out of order and time for the new moderators to step in and earn there stripes if this has happened but there is nothing personal or out of order in this thread than is seen all the time on other threads.

Take a deep breath, read it through again and then make a decision on whether to leave the forum or not, which you shouldnt because I want to keep banging heads in the future.I have nearly rushed off in the light of abusive PMs in the past but didnt and I am glad I stuck around.
:D

Re: Rory McIroy

Not sure what the point is. The comment has been made and even if the person was to get blocked they could sign on again. Just p****d off that I go out of my way on here to try and see both sides of most argumentsand have mediated and advised (mono's early problems being an example) numerous times and as soon as I put forward what I considered a logical, balanced and reasoned viewpoint I get sarcastic or rude comments.

Re: Rory McIroy

All the hype the lad is getting is well deserved and i'm sure he will be successful in future, i just hope when he goes through a rough spell which most top players do that the press etc don't write him off and kick him whilst he's down as they tend to do in other sports.

Let's hope there's a few more young british lads coming through the ranks onto the world stage.

Welcome to my world Homer!!!!

You wont leave,I know it,you know it,everyone else knows it because deep down you LOVE IT!!!!!

Had my trouser rolled up when I said it so I REALLY mean it!!

Re: Rory McIroy

I really feel that Rory is the real deal, and I love his attitude. Even though I know he's made mistakes, even in Dubai were he made a hash of the last few holes he showed good mental strength when he then got up and down from a v.hard position to win.

Also notibly, yesterday he made two consecutive bogies, putting him out of the top runners and then made eagle, birdie. I know it wasn't a pressure situation but it is still impressive.

I really hope the press doesn't make a Tim Henman out of him though, choking him with massive expectations (and then flaming him for loosing in the semi-finals when hes sometimes outplayed himself to get there :D) . However, I doubt this will happen as golf isn't quite such headline news.

Homer, stick around. Your one of the main posters here, what else would you fill your time with!

With regards to the PMs, people need to get a grip, this is only a golf forum no need to get riled up and abusive.

Re: Rory McIroy

Abusive PM's are out of order. The user should be reported.

Aall members have a right to express an opinion on any topic set up for discussion. Diverse opinions are what makes this forum special.
If we all had the same opinion the forum eould be meaningless.

Re: Rory McIroy

Still 2 years to go until he will win a tournament in the US because by law he must not sip the winner's champagne - at least his caddy has to order it.

In Louisville I was asked to prompt an ID buying a couple of beer cans and cigarettes - and I am 43 !

Re: Rory McIroy

It is a shame there have been arguements over this, as it is a pretty trivial thing to fall out over.

Is Rory going to be the next big thing? Maybe, eventually there has to be someone, and he is in the right place at the right time (on this side of the Atlantic anyway).

I would argue that currently he has age on his side, and that being 18/9 is an advantage, as at that age you are fearless. Maybe what seperates out those that go on to bigger things is the ability to cope when self doubt creeps in. Sergio at that age was pretty invincable, but now, not so. He used to hole putts for fun, but what happened?

I think a bit of hype is good, and am glad he is doing well, but we moan over all the Tiger hype, so why is this any different. Because he is British? I don't really see a difference. If the media prattle on about anyone to the exclusion of others, it gets boring.

I hope he does well, as I also hope for Ross Fisher, Oliver Wilson, and Chris Wood (who are also doing well, but staying under the hype radar). a new generation of talent is always exciting, but expectations should be realistic.

It is too early to call.

(I can understand the NI boys getting excited, as he is one of their own, and also they have seen him growing up, coming throught the NI golf scene).

Re: Rory McIroy

Young Rory did appear to hit several duff chips from what little coverage I saw of him, nonetheless he is a real talent and a player people should get excited about. I would agree however that saying he'll win a Major is optimistic at this stage, it's still early days and we've seen a good few 'prospects' not quite make the grade down the years.
All it takes is a missed 4 footer and a lost tournament for the demons to set in. Young people are well known for being fearless putters but once you've a few years in you and many 'crucial missed putt' memories lodged in the brain, golf and especially high pressure pro golf can be a cruel game.
Lets wish Rory the best but not place huge expectations on such young shoulders just yet. Hopefully his management team will be better than Michelle Wie's though!

Re: Rory McIroy

I saw the fluffed chips too, although from my (somewhat limited) experience of playing out of the cabbage that passes for rough in florida, it isn't easy, and is a bit of an aquired skill. It may be that his inexperience has counted against him in this instance.

At the moment the whole being on tour thing is clearly fun for him. It will interesting to see how he copes when it all becomes a bit more humdrum.

Oh, and whatever people think of Tim Henman (mentioned a few pages back), he was a blommin good tennis player, and a lot mentally stronger than people give him credit for. His only real problem was he wasn't good enough to beat Sampras. Well who was?

Re: Rory McIroy

Hes a promising player, I hope people do not try to label him as the new Tiger and I hope people are not expecting him to produce the goods so early on in his career. One thing for sure is that he need to sort his hair out, that is one dodgy barnet!

Re: Rory McIroy

Paul Way was a young golfer in the early 80's (played on a Ryder Cup team) who was hyped in the same way as McIlroy as the next big thing in the wake of Seve and Faldo but who after some tour success disappered after losing his card.

As I say, he was a member at the Nevill in Tunbridge Wells (as was Jamie Spence).
I was playing with my brother Clive there one day when he (Way) walked up to the first tee to start a practice round with some mates. We both teed off (I excelled myself with a topped drive in front of him) but we soon let them through.
A good friend of mine at the time was the assistant pro at the club and he used to hate playing with Paul Way. Way would putt out and walk off the green before my friend had putted, and wait on the next tee to drive off leaving my friend to replace the flag etc. Right big headed git apparantly.

Re: Rory McIroy

How on earth did i miss this thread??? I only read through it when i heard about the falling out.

Anyway, my two penneth...I can kind of see both sides of the argument, i'm leaning more towards Homer's (and imurg's) side if i'm being honest as I posted something similar on the issue last week, think it was on my WGC thread, about the fact that Butch Harmon cannot speak about Rory without gushing and its a bit of a concern.

As imurg has already stated, the way of the British public is to build someone up....and then knock them right back down again. Take beckham for example after the World Cup, yes he kicked Simeone and got sent off, but he was built up as the Messiah before the event and look how he was treated after it?

Rory is undoubtedly a fantastic talent and probably the future of golf, but all this lavish praise being heaped on him from every corner is soon enough going to weigh heavy on his shoulders, i hope it doesnt but i think said lavish praise will do more harm than good.

He should stay in the US, where he can be left alone more than over here, and develop himself and his game and lets see where he is in 2-3 years time.

As for the abusive PM's....well that just smacks of someone not man enough to voice his opinions (albeit personal attacks) on a forum level, pretty childish if you ask me and should definately be reported.

Re: Rory McIroy

I to missed the thread altogether, until I saw the fall out.

I just worry that if our media put him under the microscope like they continusley do to the England football team the presure can get to much.

I do think he will be big, I just think it will take time.
