I see the young Ulsterman is doing well in Miami. I've been playing since 1969 and have never seen a talent like this lad. I think he could win a major SOON. What about Rory winning at Augusta???

He's playing so well I wouldn't put it past him - but lets be realistic. If he lands a big one this season it'll be a huge slice of fortune.

However, Good luck to him and I hope the form continues.

Is anyone else tired of the constant praise which Butch Harmon drenches McIlroy in? Although it is indisputable that McIlroy is a class act, the same record is being played over and over again.

Who cares? Once you reach the stage where your performance is 1% technique and 99% confidence/mental state, your coach needs to maintain the 99% bit as importantly as the rest.

I've just noticed that I spelt Rory's surname wrongly. Apologies. No excuse except a few beers after golf and several glasses of the red stuff with lunch.

Re: Rory McIroy

I think there is way too much hype attached to him at the moment. Yes he did well to get his maiden tour win but lets not forget he has already blown several more gilt edged opportunities. He has never been in contention in a major going into the final nine holes and I believe the capability of dealing with such pressures only comes with having experienced it and learnt to deal with it.

I think he has talent and MAY go onto contend for majors but there are a host of top players (Garcia, Westwood, Monty, etc) who have played at the highest level for years and never won one. Just because you are young and have immense talent doesn't make it a given that you will get the breaks. I wish Sky, Harmon, the media and to a degree even this forum would stop giving him the big up and let hime learn his trade for several seasons. Let him come out of his teens and then see where he is. He will have matured a bit, got use to the travelling and demands on his time etc and will have developed physically. Then I think it will be fair to say whether he will be the next big thing.

Homer
You're a pessimist! This lad is still in his teens, has won on the European Tour and even Ernie Els has said he will take over from Tiger. I reckon he'll be the number one when I'm too old to walk round a course. He is special!

Not a pessimist more a pragmatic and more realistic approach. There have been loads of these great young hopes (anyone remember how Paul Way was going to be the next big thing according to Seve and Faldo). I hope he does have a long and distinguished career but I don't see why Harmon and Sky have to fawn over him when he hasn't done anything other than win a tour event, good though it was.

He is a talent, but like so many like him in all sports there's a real danger that too much too young will do more harm than good.

A talent who I do think will be one of Europes best ever players and a talent who hasn't yet 'blown several more gilt edged opportunities' as you claimed Homer.

Dont Agree! Homer

I think he is worthy of all the praise and will turn his talent into wins without doubt.

He is 19 years old, played off +6 before turning pro,has already won one of the major events on the euro tour against one of the strongest fields you could get for a euro tour event,is in the top 50 in the world, got to the last 8 of his 1st world event in his 1st U.S appearence against the top 64 in the world and was beaten by the winner, finished top 25 in 1st PGA Tour strokeplay event and is now near the top of the leaderboard in this world event.
Think about what you and most of Joe Public were doing at 19 years old?

How many Majors has he had chance to play in so far,so to say he has not been there down the stretch is unfair seeing he has hardly had the chance to YET!!.

I feel pretty sure he will AT LEAST contend in a major this year and will be one of our big players in the Ryder Cup next year.

So you think he wont get hype having done all this at the age of 19,that the media will just leave him alone, err no I dont think so.Players who have done the above at 19 years old dont come along very often so it is inevitable the hype and praise is going to come from all angles.

He is getting the hype because of his play, what he is doing on the golf course and that is why it is deserved praise.

Point taken, Homer. You may remember Ronan Rafferty? What became of him? Paul Way? Where is he now? However, I think that Rory is gonna do great things. An Open within 2 or 3 years? Who knows.

Shanker, sorted that for you.

Luckily hes based over here where there isnt really such a thing as paparazzi, I think he will keep himself grounded and knowing Michael his coach, he'll have plenty of help staying that way.

Homer what is wrong with people expressing there opinions about Rory, if people think he is going to be the next best thing then why can't they state it? If they are wrong then so what?

I think its great all the Hype he is getting. Jesus Christ the Guy just got his first win on Tour at 18, if thats not special, I dont know what is!

Thank you Brendy for correcting my error. What do you suggest for tomorrow's hangover? I'm not on the tee until 11.30.
