Rory McIlroy

Great round.
On one hole he was angry with himself after leaving a 30 foot putt with a couple of feet of downhill break about 6 inches short!
You just can't please some people can you...?

He really was fantastic. Wonderful iron play. What a talent. Fun watching Mickelson too and hearing Butch saying he was totally mystified how he was only 3 over despite hitting it sideways off the tee. Some amazing scrambling.

Incredible round of golf.

Hope he can go on to win it, then I can feel smug as my prediction of him winning a major this year after the Augusta blow up, after everyone else said it would take him much longer to get over it, will come to fruition. :D

Sad times for Luke Donald though :( Needs to finish today on a couple under for the tournament to have a chance at the weekend methinks.

I watching Rory in amazement last night, Everybody talks about Luke Donalds swing but if i was to have one of them (in my dreams) it would be Mcilroys every day.

It was interesting to hear what Butch said about his strokes that are not a full swing and how he can struggle with these at times.

So am I the only one who would take rory's swing over lukes?

Great to see Augusta clearly isn't playing on McIlroys round - YET. Would be great to see him lead into the final ound and get the job done but you can't help worry what will go through his mind standing on the first tee on Sunday and when he hits the first bad shot of the round. If there aren't any demons still lurking we could be looking at a sensational win. Long way to go yet though

I wouldn't have thought so, but it's still Luke's for me. He has the purest, most effortless golf swing I've ever seen. McIlroy wouldn't be far down on my "swings I'd like" list though.

Rory was really on top of his game and the course. Fantastic to watch such a taming of the Congressional.

He is certainly giving himself the best chance of correcting the wrong of Augusta.

I'd happily take it! :D Probably the best balance-for-power swing there is - just liquid! :D

Fantastic round from Rors, i think he's still young enough to be able to bounce back and win this week. Bit different for the older guys who have blown a few chances i.e sergio He believes he'll win a few.

He is certainly young enough for April to have washed over him by now, after all he has competed in comps since and its not like you don't feel pressure in those competitions.
One thing to remember though is that the pins were set to easy yesterday, today will be stark in contrast. There are a few greens last night where I was thinking "if they put the pin there this week, it could run up some cricket scores"

Saying that, if you are hitting 17 greens in regulation, you wouldn't like to be walking off the 18th worse than par for the day.

I think if Rory can shoot a big scrore today he has a great chance.
Of course it's not how you start....blah, blah.
But I don't know if anyone in the field has what it takes to catch him on that course.
We shall see...

Great shooting from the young Northern Irishman, well done.

I'd love to see him win the US Open but there is a long long way to go.

Swing wise, Rors is just a natural action.

But no none else matched him. It's easy for us to suggest that the course layout was easy, but still an incredible feat from the youngster. this is a tournament where they don't like winners in negative figures, credit due where it's due.

He's my favourite swing to watch but if I swung like him my lower back would snap like a twig.
I love how he really whips through hard on the full shots, but still finishes perfectly balanced.

How did he get on in the open?? 63 - 80 I think.

Lets not get too ahead of ourselves.

Nice swing but not my favourite by a good mile.

Interesting point but I see it differently. Open leads after round one then blows up. Learns a lot from that. Masters leads every round for first three rounds, blows up. Learns from that. Congressional, leads from start to finish? I think he can do it.

The difference between the Majors and other tournaments is you get punished more if you are offline. McIlroy is so accurate he just needs the mentality to not let one bad shot ruin his round.
