Rory McIlroy

Rory - have always struggled to understand why at times he gets dragged across the coals

He wears his heart on his sleeve , he loves the game and his talent is out of this world

At times he puts his foot in his mouth but he is human

I guess we do love to knock someone when they are so good

But I for one am proud that he represents European Golf and himself with such raw emotion

Those scenes on the final green will be iconic

That's exactly what endears me to him more than some more robotic types. Sure his early stuff about the Ryder Cup etc was foolish but he is more frank and honest in interviews than many pros. I just feel what you see is what you get. He's not a brand. He's not merchandising himself. He's Rory. Long may that continue.

That’s a really great point and something I haven’t really considered- we know he does stuff with Taylor Made with everyone else but he doesn’t seem to be all over social media putting his “brand” out there - it’s just golf

I honestly can't understand why so many like him, on a personality basis - every time he's interviewed he comes across very stroppy and whiny, and a bit up himself to me. Obviously others aren't seeing it that way, but I just cannot warm to him at all.

Rory the golfer though - I won't hide from the fact that I believed he would never win the Masters. It seemed like he would overthink it every year, wanting it too much, always had a blow-up round that put him out of contention, getting in his own way, mental toughness not quite there, etc. This time though, somehow, he just about held it together and got through all that and dragged it over the line. On the one hand, he was lucky that Bryson didn't bother showing up for the final round, but on the other hand, so many times we see how hard it is to play well when your playing partner (or whatever the term is for the competitor you're paired with) is having a mare and dragging you down with him. He had some awful holes on Sunday but hit at least three absolutely unbelievable shots when it looked like the chips were down.

I did always feel he had more majors in him, just didn't think he would get the green jacket - now that's out of the way there could be no stopping him. I reckon he'll add another 3 before he hangs up his clubs. Much as I don't want him to. ;)

Apparently golf shouldn't be tribal but in the same breath "glad he represents Europe"

I'm hoping now that monkey is off his back he wont be so whiny in the interview as he will be more chilled

I agree with you. Can't warm to McIlroy the person and I think had DeChambeau played more stratigically rather than having to chase (not sure he knows how to not go flat out) and it had been a 3 way race with Rose it could have been a very different story especially after that first duffed wedge

I don't think he's whiny at all, and always really honest in interviews. Suppose we all see things differently, he gets a lot of stick for always having an opinion on things, you wouldn't hear his opinion if he wasn't constantly asked what he thought of LIV etc.

The fighting at the Ryder cup (when he had a big guy looking after him) is a prime example of it mind

Example of what? Wasn't this when the caddy was pissing about on his line? We get annoyed when someone does that when we've got a 4 footer for a triple, that was the Ryder Cup!
Not really an excuse "it's the Ryder cup" it was still poor darts

Caddy was a doornob but Rory didn't behave well

It’s the same if Murray - we like to bash those that are succesful and find faults with them , maybe it’s jealousy

He is prob the most high profile golfer after Woods , and because of his nature he is honest and speaks from the heart -

People - and especially people on the internet - have a remarkable tendency to not be consistent when talking about who they like and who they don’t like

A simple comment from Taylor Gooch, or Phil M, or Bryson gets rehashed ad nauseam as a prime example of XYZ, and others in herd-like mentality join in….and snippy little comments continue years later

But then the same logic and behaviour isn’t applied in another example..

I seriously do not get the negativity around Rory.

We are all human and absolutely none of us are anywhere near perfect…just our own version of imperfect; that as individuals so many feel entitled to be judgemental of others when we know nothing at all of what is going on in their head…just don’t get it.

Well done Rory…that was fantastic and I wish you well and all good things for the rest of this season, and seasons to come.

And anytime Rory has made a comment it’s also come back to bite him - the Ryder Cup one a perfect example - and he owned it

The negativity is shocking about his character IMO. He knows his voice carries weight and he speaks a lot on behalf of the lighter voices within the tour, LIV being the perfect example.

I’m happy to say he proved me wrong, I thought Bryson would be stronger mentally and I was convinced I had been proved right after 3, fair play to the lad.

I thought when Rory started with a double Bryson would have kicked on but I think his all or nothing way of playing isn't always suited to a tight battle on a course where it can go wrong very quickly

I think Rory is probably one the most uncorporate high ranked golfer out there. I like Rose, but even he has followed the “thank my sponsors….” Gumpf that’s spouted.
Didn’t the PGA ask him to take the players lead against LIV? He can’t be criticised for being honest and forthright and stick to his principles.
He reminds me in his off course way like a player I never liked, and that’s Tiger Woods.
I whilst I never liked TW, I do respect his record.
Bryson seemed to be blown away by the way Rory kept getting back up and landing blows. That was so funny.

If you are going to quote me at least add the context it was posted in and also get the quote right

“he represents European Golf”
