Rory McIlroy

So pleased he did it. Hopefully noe having that monkey off his back will allow him to relax a little more and win more often.

It’s amazing how much stick he’s had for not winning a Major since whenever. Although I’m guilty of thinking he’s been very inconsistent, a quick look at his record down the years clearly shows an unbelievable level of consistency.

Previously thought I’d cry my eyes out when/if he finally did it, but I was just smiling like a Cheshire Cat for about 20 minutes taking it all in! So so good that.

You couldn’t write it really. The pairing, the double on the 1st, coming back to lead again, the nerves, the mistakes, not leading again, leading again, being joint leader and then the play off. If it was a film you’d say it was far fetched.

Well done Rory, enjoy the win and the weight off your shoulders.

He's actually been the most consistent golf over a long period since Tiger.
He's just not managed to get over the line in majors as often as his ranking would suggest.
Although the narrative is that this could open the floodgates. I guess it's also possible that he could lose a little edge now he's won everything you can in golf.

Said it on the masters thread, if he had lost yesterday I couldnt have seen him winning another major again.. what with the mental baggage from the last few and then letting that lead go.. but winning that I can honestly see him winning another one this year.

I reckon the open this year in Ireland he will win

This thread is about Rory so I won't mention the other playing so hats off to him winning a green jacket .. part of history now .. I like how the masters let past champs play for as long as they want so we can now enjoy Rory playing at the masters long after he hits the seniors tour

I know he holds the course record at Royal Portrush but I think the occasion might get to him again, hope not.

Next Major is at Quail Hollow though, if he drives the ball like he did for the first 3 rounds then he might win that by 5. He loves that place and it suits his game so much.

Rory - have always struggled to understand why at times he gets dragged across the coals

He wears his heart on his sleeve , he loves the game and his talent is out of this world

At times he puts his foot in his mouth but he is human

I guess we do love to knock someone when they are so good

But I for one am proud that he represents European Golf and himself with such raw emotion

Those scenes on the final green will be iconic

I honestly can't understand why so many like him, on a personality basis - every time he's interviewed he comes across very stroppy and whiny, and a bit up himself to me. Obviously others aren't seeing it that way, but I just cannot warm to him at all.

Rory the golfer though - I won't hide from the fact that I believed he would never win the Masters. It seemed like he would overthink it every year, wanting it too much, always had a blow-up round that put him out of contention, getting in his own way, mental toughness not quite there, etc. This time though, somehow, he just about held it together and got through all that and dragged it over the line. On the one hand, he was lucky that Bryson didn't bother showing up for the final round, but on the other hand, so many times we see how hard it is to play well when your playing partner (or whatever the term is for the competitor you're paired with) is having a mare and dragging you down with him. He had some awful holes on Sunday but hit at least three absolutely unbelievable shots when it looked like the chips were down.

I did always feel he had more majors in him, just didn't think he would get the green jacket - now that's out of the way there could be no stopping him. I reckon he'll add another 3 before he hangs up his clubs. Much as I don't want him to. ;)
