Rory McIlroy

Smilingly?? He had a look of disdain on his face! You call that a smile where you're from?? :ROFLMAO:

Imagine if they asked say, Fleetwood the same question. I reckon straight away he'd be saying "who wouldn't want Rory's driving? And Scheffler's wedge game is top class..." etc. It's not weakness to pay a fellow pro a compliment.
Fleetwood isn't exactly one of the hot favourites to win a Major, so perhaps he would be a bit more comfortable admitting his weaknesses in relation to others. The media are not going to make a big deal out of it. Of course, you are only imagining what he would say. Given you obviously like Fleetwood, then you are more likely going to think of him responding in a more favourable way to you, and perhaps add how he loves puppies :ROFLMAO:

I can see it being less likely that Scheffler, Bryson, Woods, Nicklaus, etc would start admitting other pros being stronger in certain areas on the eve of an important Major. And, there are probably plenty of pros not expected to be in contention that wouldn't admit it either, simply because they want to go into the tournament will 100% confidence in their own game, and believe every part of their game is top notch.

Well, no, I just selected Fleetwood as he's generally considered the nicest guy in golf, so I couldn't picture him being as flippant and closed off as Rory, that's all. I genuinely believe even Scottie and Bryson would throw a brief backhanded compliment before saying 'no, I'm happy with my game at the moment' or something like that. The only other person who shuts down questions as stroppily as Rory is Brooks. And maybe Mickelson but you don't hear from him as much these days.

Can’t believe so much is being made of this, again questions being asked to try and grab a headline or undermine someone.

The same question could have been asked in a different way and an answer given. The way it was phrased was to put down an area of his own game.

Fleetwood may well have answered the question the way it was asked, but I’d argue he won’t think he is the best so would happily swap. Rory’s mindset is completely different to Fleetwood (as he was the name picked out)

He was a bit, shall we say, off with the interviewer or at least the question, but bare in mind he’s probably asked a hundred questions every day of his life, I can understand why he wouldn’t want to answer childish ones. Just close it down. Felt the interviewer was a bit daft carrying on pushing the same question.

Would tiger woods have been asked that question? If so, what would he have said?

Ah excellent a perfect transition of obsessions from Trent to Rory, seamlessly in time for the pga to start.

Brilliant Segway as it were.

Golf journalism is arguably at the lowest standard ever right now.

Lots of poor questions and biased articles are trotted out whenever a big tournament is happening.

Is it really limited to golf? Please direct me in a direction of any off journalism these days

It’s all click bait now. Not sure if it’s been discussed on here, but Rory was also asked about that Bryson interview after the masters, it seemed as though Rory had only seen the clip that kept being pushed by the media (ie, just the ‘Rory didn’t talk to me all day’ bit), rather than the full interview which showed it was a total non story and was taken well out of context.

Was a good answer to that - he wasn’t there to win friends but to win a major

Quite a few on here fell for that non story though iirc 🤣

Hahaha, some people seriously love to make a mountain out of a mole hill. I hadn't seen the interview, so just had a look now to see what all the fuss was about. Basically, about 30 seconds of footage, where an interviewer asks him what part of whose game he'd take, and he smilingly replied he is happy with all areas of his game. The interviewer then continues to try and press him on it (clearly to try and create some headline like "Rory wishes he could putt like xxxx"), and he simply repeated that he isn't forced to pick an option in the hypothetical scenario, no point in dragging this out. And it got some laughs from the audience in the room, so not sure it was overly frosty.

I'd be interested to hear how many other of the leading pro's going into a tournament would answer such a question. Would many of them be prepared to admit they'd rather have another aspect of another players game, thus admitting a potential weakness in their own?

This is the journo and includes other responses from players

It is hard to win majors still. I reckon he nabs 3 more and finishes on 8.

It is mate I just think his game’s that good he’ll rack up more than that, not just game but fitness wise he’s a machine he’ll be top level for a lot longer than most
