Ok, so ive just regripped my scotty with a white, £8 golf pride putter grip. I used an air compressor to remove the old grip and cleaned it up after taking the tape off. Easy.

I was gonna ask a pro to fit the new one but became impatient. I only had masking tape to hand and figured...

1. Its a putter so the grip shouldnt twist if im succesful.
2. It should slide off easy if im not.

It was easy, no vice, club bewteen the legs and feet and slid on, wiggled slightly to
Line it up.

Questions. Has anyone tried doing irons, hybrids woods etc with just masking tape and if so did the grips move after use? I know the double sided stuff is so it bonds but im just curious.

For those that are into regripping, what have you found best/easiest to do/use to regrip?

I just use, double sided grip tape, bottle of White Spirit, pour into grip, then empty it down the taped shaft, push on, line up...............BINGO........

If u have managed to get your putter grip on straight, then your irons and woods should be easy

Yes i did, but this was using masking tape not double sides sticky tape. Id guess theres not much difference?

I could be wrong Tony but I always assumed that the outside layer of adhesive on the double sided tape was to give adhesion to the inside of the grip (as the club will invariably be moving fast and the force exerted on the grip quite great) so masking tape would not offer that adhesion and the grip may twist.
Your putter barely moves at any pace so I doubt you will see any ill-effect from the masking tape there. Not sure I would try it with a 4 iron travelling at 80+MPH though...

One sided velcro is as useful tony ;)
With a putter you will get away with it. With clubs you will be swinging potentially over 100mph it needs to be double sided and done well. Im not saying dont diy but get plenty of practice on one club. Normal tape will cause the grip to warp and distort and worst case, come flying off.

Can I suggest that you start playing on your own? Might be a good idea otherwise you could end up injuring a few people. As stated by Greig, it is double sided for a reason, expet to be stood on the tee holding your driver grip as the club flies off over your shoulder!

You'll end up holding a grip as your beloved club flies off into the distance. You need double sided tape to do it properly ;)

Gamola Golf has all you'll need.

Always wondering , when ya buy the grip , double sided tape & white spirit etc , would it not work out nearly the same price as geting a pro to do it .. ? got mine done a couple of weeks ago , had shop credit so got it done with that dosh but even if i was paying id have goten the pro to do it , just in case ha .

I serviced my first car when I was 18, cost me 3 times as much for the mechanic to put things right afterwards. Ever since (nearly 40 years) I have paid professionals to do their job, if this means me working overtime to pay for it so be it. I let those that know do!!

Not really, in my experience it is cheaper and you get a better selection to choose from.

Oh, who is your chef and do you know the right end of a mop to hold then?

Changing grips is a simple task really and is almost therapeutic at the end of a busy day.

Buy your kit from the likes of Gamopa and it's a lot cheaper than getting the pro to do it.

It costs about £7-£10 per grip for a pro to do it,i changed all grips on irons and Driver and 3 wood and all materials cost about £25. Also you get the satisfaction knowing you did it yourself.

Sorry guys bit unclear here...

I know double sided sticky tape is needed and wouldnt try irons without it, i meant i guess there wouldnt be much difference sliding the grip over double sided sticky tape as it would be masking tape. (being its soaked in solvant)

The reason i used masking for the putter is because there will be no force or speed to make the grip shift or come off and if i messed up i could blow it off with out ruining the grip.

Sliding a grip over double sided tape covered with white spirit will be even easier than just masking tape as the glue becomes slimey and slipery.

Done loads of grips over the years and it is therapeutic and gives you a sense of pride. However these days I'm a grumpy, lazy old git so the pro gets to do mine. Fair play tohugh, he does me a good price and if I want something he doesn't have if I go to Gamola and get them he'll only charge a few quid for fitting

Its very easy to slip the grip on the double sided tape as long as you use plenty of solvent.

Your putter will probably be fine until the first time you helicopter it. :mmm:

I re-grip my own clubs because it saves a little money but I also know that it will be done well. You cant always guarantee the quality unless you know someone that you can trust and keep going back to.

I've seen some real botch jobs in my time.
