Refused entry to a comp - how would you react?

Am I right in understanding you only entered day 2 of the club champs on the 18 hole course, therefor not actually able to win the whole thing as there was presumably a day one you did not enter?

exactly, yes.

I didn't know you could have membership to the 9 hole course only, I would have considered that! Is it a new offering? Good way to hang on to your handicap and reduce the sunk cost of golf membership.

As far as I know no, its been around a while. The cost is just a fraction of the main course and its a very good 9 holes.....greens are fantastic.

Good news, I felt another member leaving a course story ending 😱
I've just received a mail from them and they've overturned the decision. They've accepted all that I said and re-instated me in the competition and asked for me to consider joining the match team! Result!

Thanks all for the input.

Fair play mate. Good on them for recognising they made a mistake and rectifying it.

Yes I've played it quite a few times. The only issue I've had with the greens was on a couple of occasions the 6th green was covered in goose poo!

It's not an easy 9 holes either, despite the length. The greens are small and quite a few tee shots require precision, so hopefully won't get boring playing it a lot.

Result indeed!

ha ha, Goose poo isnt something I've seen much of.....in fact the goose population must have decreased as they arent so obvious any more.

Agree its not an easy 9, its all about putting the ball where it needs to be for the next shot....and yes you're right about the small greens, there are a couple which are tricky to hold!

the only downside I've seen so far is that on competition day you will get round for the next 9 to find group(s) of pay as you play people wanting to get out.....so you end up alternating a comp group with a paying group, so it can slow up a bit at the turn.

Are most of the comps played over 18 holes?

I've just had a quick look and yes... They all seem to be 18. I've got a feeling that the old boys mid week swindle is 9 holes but everything else seems to be 18.

Exactly part of my argument. I feel that if I am restricted in the competitions that I'm able to enter then surely I shouldn't have been able to enter them in the first place or indeed as you say be clearly told of the repercussions of entering said comp.

I went on to say that it should be something for the club to look at so that it doesn't happen again.
If you are a member of the 9 hole and not the 18 hole this should be classed as an away comp.
Its like playing in an open then your home club banning you from your next comp because you played away.
Baffaling.

Not really baffling - There is only 1 club but there are different eligibility elements associated with the various sections.
Most of the issues were requested by the 9 hole section to protect 'their competitions' - this has worked reasonably satisfactorily over recent years. It has been informal because of the very nature of the membership classes; and to further confuse things the playing rights of the various membership categories have also changed over recent years.

In this specific case it would appear that someone made a mistake - It happens, and it doesn't always require a committee to mess up either!

Glad it got sorted Adam.

Would it not be a sensible approach to affiliate the 9-hole course as a separate affiliated club? We have a similar situation with two affiliated clubs and it works well.

Not that simple; and there aren't any real issues with the current situation. The 9 hole isn't a separate club, there is a class of membership that only has playing rights over that course in exactly the same way as 5 day members of many courses. Arrangements exist to cross over that restriction when it's considered appropriate (as I'm sure exist at most clubs for specific weekend events etc).
There is also a class of membership that has playing rights on all courses, but has restricted entry to certain events on all as well (all documented).

Would you recommend your 'solution' to the Berkshire, Wentworth or Sunningdale?

seems strange you were allowed to play the other course you are not a member of and not the one you are. i would think why would you bother paying to join the 18 hole if you can just join the 9 hole and still play the comps on the other??

You have to pay the guest green fee rate on top of the competition entry fee, so it's not economical to do it regularly.
