Been to the range twice in the last week and have been terrible!!! Really annoyed about how bad I was.

Been reading alot lately to trying to improve my game and taken tips from on here and from the website and I'm thinking I'm trying to run before I can walk. Felt like my shape was all wrong, my swing was poor, felt really hunched, positioning was all wrong, couldn't hit a drive over 140/150, 3/4/5 irons didn't get past 110/120 - so blooming annoying

Do you over complicate things at the range or try new swings/techniques and end up totally getting it wrong?

Got a lesson planned for next week so hopefully that will help.

When im trying something new at the range and it doesnt work I just go back to hitting a few shots with my wedge just to feel the ball flying then move back to making some changes, if you start thinking too much you just tense up and start spraying the balls all over the shop, then its all downhill!!!

i only ever take 3 clubs to the range my driver,7 iron and a wedge and only get 45 balls i start with the wedge to loosen up then 7 iron then driver then finish with the wedge lets face it if you can hit these clubs the rest is just the same BUT i take my time over every shot the worst thing you can do is turn into a machine gun firing ball after ball without assessing what your doing just relax and let your swing work not your brain.

if your not hitting your driver over 150 then leave your 3 and 4 iron at home. much to hard to hit, if by your own admission, your not swinging well. concentrate on hitting your 9 iron to 110/120 and your 6iron to 150.

My 9 iron and wedge were getting hit pretty well, but my short game has always been pretty good by my standards.

I always seem to have a problem with my driver anyway but yesterday was worse than ever, going to speak to the pro next week in my lesson about it. I've always struggled with getting distance so there's definitely things to work on :D

Went to the range last night. Working hard on some changes from my last lesson and decided to film a few to see if the club was in the right place. What I felt I was doing and what was happening were worlds apart but the ball contact and strike was really good. Substance over style wins. Sent a video over to the pro and he's not thrilled by the position at the top of the backswing but can see some improvement so he is saying let the ball dictate how you are swinging it. Seems reasonable. I guess its sometimes a question of trusting yourself more although that can seem a huge leap of faith

I think this is a hard one to answer. To many people go to the range and just hit ball after ball. Under the misguided thought that the more balls they hit the better they will get, winding up by just grooving their faults into their swing. Also they have so many swing thoughts its no wonder they can't hit the ball. Just one thought, just one thing to work on at a time. Also full preshot routine before each ball, Only hit half a basket, one at the most.

My own practise routine would be something like this. First I dont or very rarely go to the range. Just for example at the moment I am working on hand realize.

I will not hit any golf balls as I know they will most likely go all over the place, the last thing I want is to start thinking about my ball flight at this time. So I will hit a tee or one of those foam balls. Then I can concentrate on what I am doing not what the ball is doing.

Only when I am happy with what I am practising will I put a ball down, hit maybe 5/6 shots then pack up and go home. May be a few more or a few less. As I will pack up after hitting a really good shot. So I go home on a positive note

This is what suits me, though many will probable disagree. Each to their own I guess. In the end its what works for you.

you say people are ingraining bad swing movements but you cant possibly be ingraining your positive swing moves by hitting so little balls. i get what you say aout trying to leave on a positive note. sometimes if im playing 2 balls. if i smash one down the middle at the last, ill just play 1 as to not leave that on a sour note!

Its just what works for me Garry thats all. Must add though I have a park across the road where I live, will spend half an hour or so everyday there(when no snow on the ground). Alway checking my set up and half swings in the lounge too(drives HID's mad lol).

So do hit a lot of balls. But no large numbers at a time.

My latest eurica moment is to make sure I concentrate 100% on the full shot. I used to think if I practised enough it would eventually become natural but this has never happened yet. I now give absolute 100% from when I tee the ball up to when the ball has landed. I used to think this was what I was doing but then looking back at the moment of impact I would start thinking things like "wonder where thats going to go", now it's just pure concentration on the shot for the full shot and it has definately helped.
