Rakes. Where to leave them

Haha, this old chestnut. It's been a little while...

I prefer to leave the head of the rake in the bunker, with the handle resting up on the lip of it - usually to one side. Trying to reduce the likelihood of a ball hitting the handle of the rake if it's lying flat on the ground.

I go with @Orikoru but equally each course has their own view so I tend to follow what happens and repeat. There is no definitive answer as different clubs have different views on this.

The OP already started a thread on this 6 months ago, with 5 pages of replies. Are you expecting to get new and original points of view on this new thread? Or do you feel it's important to keep in touch with the latest developments in raking philosophies and technology?

Professionals say outside of bunkers
My club is in the middle of the bunker
Played today and they were in the bunker but right at the edge

if its in the bunker (wholly, lying flat in the middle) then its not obstructing a ball in the general area. There are then no cases of a "safe" ball hitting a rake and going in.

I hate the rake in the middle of the sand. You have to wander over to get it....more footprints that need raking. Those people who don't rake leave even more footprints all over the place. I leave the very end of the handle just out of the sand....preferably also at an angle that if a ball hits it it might actually stay out.

You mean, as would be inevitable, with the head of the rake close to a face of the bunker and running parallel to it...perfect for trapping the ball that runs into it - joys .

With our bunkers all having 'all around' revetted faces, that option is a total non-starter for us...but as they are almost all quite 'shallow' front-to-back it's in the middle of the bunker head of rake green side - with handle oriented towards the flag thankyou.

Think before worrying about where the rakes are placed the first issue is getting people to use them

How's that inevitable? Would completely depend on the size and shape of the bunker, plus I would leave the rake sticking out of one side of the bunker, not straight out of the entry point.

It's the same sort of chat in as landing in a divot, flag in/out , none of these have any real effect on your round in general but stir up a lot of "debate"

Interestingly (??) my club has just issued an email stating that all rake rests are to be treated as immovable obstructions.

Last time i played my course (last Tuesday) we didnt have ANY rake rests!!!

Playing tomorrow so will see what has been implemented in the way of rake rests and where they have been put. Might run a personal sweepstake with myself as to how many rakes I find that have been left anywhere but in a rest.

Personally, I'd like to see players being made to carry their own rake.

I have no doubt that you would…my experience of those playing my track doing basically as you suggest is that many don’t do it sensibly. Every time out I find myself repositioning rakes in bunkers…rakes often left in unbelievably stupid and thoughtless positions.

Easier said than done, 100 bunkers on my course.

My preference would be outside the bunker to the side least likely to affect a ball. Club used to do this with rakes on stands.

We moved to putting them in the bunkers, I do as asked.

Fill in all the bunkers....problem solved and wouldn't hurt my feelings. Put in humpty-bumps instead.....all you have to do is mow them..
