I would of thought carrying is better for your health due to extra weight and so increases your fitness as you build strengh.

'Have' not 'of' Parmo - sorry but a pet peeve, particularly when I see undergraduates still using it in essays! :)

What you describe is essentially yomping, which is a bit separate from golf! Your fitness work for golf should be done before you get on the course, not during. While you do get some endurance benefits from carrying a bag, you do also increase the risk of injury (especially to the back) and decrease your energy levels towards the latter part of the round.

I suppose it depends on whether you want to play the best golf you can or use golf as a means of exercise/endurance training.

I generally don't get must exercise so my weekly round is the only time to shed a few pounds, but I have thought about a trolley and its something I might look at in the future.

Squat to do with physics and all to do with biomechanics.

Just think for a moment - how can using one arm at full extension to the rear pulling something be easier than using your full body weight + push muscles?

Pushing the trolley means you get to use your legs, your back and chest muscles (all the big groups). Pulling it puts stress on one side of your back and one shoulder joint and doesn't utilise any major muscle groups effectively.

If it was easier to do it by pulling it, why can't you find any prams or pushchairs that you pull?

I'm not arguing which is easier for the human body to achieve - nor which is better or less harmful to do. Just that it takes less units of energy to move a trolley by pulling it rather than pushing it. That it seems easier is the same type of thing as walking up hill - if you take the gentle winding path to the top, it will feel easier and give you less gyp than walking straight up - but the less physically demanding method will actually use more energy.
