An eagle is 2 under par correct? Can someone explain to me why Americans call 3 under par a double eagle? Surely that is 4 under?

albatross looked on as being a bunch of bad luck - especially shooting one - ask the ancient mariner ...
it (albatross0 first came about around the late 1920's first record of it in a report of a game in South Africa after a hole in one
the eagle is our national symbol steeped in our not so old history
so our leaning to the term double eagle & the double eagle club though albatross is used also
& our triple eagle or condor is 4 under
