In yesterday's comp i blocked a drive onto an adjacent fairway.

On arrival of the general area a threeball were making there way down to their drives.

There were four balls in view.

I made them aware that 0ne could be mine.

One chap picked up a ball, examined it and called it his, on address he noticed it wasn't his, in fact it was mine.

Now if he'd played my ball before i'd arrived, and all i found was a ball, no-one on the tee, and them putting out, I knew a 1000% where mine landed but now it's gone,

How would i proceed ?

In such situations it's definietely best to get involved in establishing which is yours rather than rely on them. If they've gone before you arrive then you have a problem that, unless you have sufficient;y strong evidence that they have removed your ball, results in a lost ball.

V Recent thread here went into such evidence. http://forums.golf-monthly.co.uk/showthread.php?76632-Ruling-Required

You may be left with running after them!

If you were 100% sure wher it had come to rest , drop a ball as close to where you think it was and play on no penalty , at all time with the agreement of & letting your playing partners know what your doing ..

Id definitely be asking the others which of them played the wrong ball , its a comp & he is facing a 2 shot penalty for it & DQ if he dosent rectify it .. & unless its the exact same ball with same markings there no real excuse to be playing ur ball , just carelessness ..

I know , ive done it ha

Lost ball unless you actually saw your ball at rest. Or you have to approach the other group and get then to check the balls they played.

In general, I'd mention there can be situations in which you did not see your ball at rest but there was sufficient other evidence that an outside agency had made off with it. E.g., an urchin running away, a ball in hand and giving you the finger. :)
