Putters explained

Stephen Hendry won all his 7 World Champs using the same snooker cue he’d had since a teenager — it got broken on a flight somewhere and he never won another (correlation definitely, causation possibly)

However…🤪

I am resisting even glancing at a TM Spider or a LAB lie-angle balanced putter — if I ever tried one, and it was better, I know I’d buy one….my putting is so bad it’s the one club I’d throw money at to make me better
My index has come down from 5.3 to 1.9 after buying a new putter...

Investing $45 on a ''new'' putter and winning $10m suggests quite strongly that you do not need to spend big money to be successful on the greens.
Especially linked with my other post no. 24, I thought my approach was very clear.

Obviously, my opinions are not shared by many on here and just attract arguments and disapproval from others so I guess I'll just keep my opinions to myself and you can argue amongst yourselves.

You didn't say expensive putter. You just said new pots and pans, ie different. Then gave an analogy of someone doing exactly that, winning with new, different, pots and pans 🤷

I'd agree, expensive doesn't have to equal better.

I bought a brand new putter in 1989 for £25 and I've won thousands of pounds of prizes with it.
It is the only brand new putter I've ever had.

But I think that I was a fairly good putter a long time before 1989. I had done a tremendous amount of putting practice in the 20 years up to 1989.

The video seemed to me to be about finding the right putter for you.
I feel that I have found the right putter for me.

How long have you had your putter? When will you know that it is the right one for you?
If/when you are convinced it is the right one for you, will you ever discard it for another one?

Have you ever considered doing a lot of putting practice (equivalent to half the amount of time you spend playing golf per week) in order to become a better putter?
eg: every 4 hours on the course = 2 hours of putting practice to be done.

Ok, in terms of putting stroke what specifically can you practice?

I know my green reading is relatively decent or not the main problem…it is consistently delivering the putter back to where it started with a straight face…either close it too much or push putts 🤪

I miss wildly more 3ft / 5ft putts than I should, and from 6-10ft it’s rare I sink one.

It’s the standard putting stroke that’s my problem.
I feel I hit close to the middle of a 7 iron more often than I hit the close of the putter 🤣🤪😳

Consistency.
Intensive practice to achieve this.

I see similarities between putting and snooker and darts.
A precise physical non-strenuous action with the hands and arms.

Takes a lot of practice to become proficient and maintain proficiency. I do not know of any other way.

My putter has been in the bag since 2010. A Wilson mallet that I bought for $5 at a Goodwill in Los Angeles when living there. Had it regripped in 2023 after making it longer due to a bad back. Have tried other putters but this one seems to suit me. I did try a zero torque putter in a shop and did really like the feel. Do who knows in a few years, when they come down in price..

I like putters, I have a few, I rarely sell them apart from my Odyssey Rossie and a Wilson 88xx ( the scotty del mar replaced it when it was released with a honey dip finish)
Currently in the bag it’s the jailbreak square to square .. I see a benefit, so it’s staying. But if the greens get rapid I may go to the Del Mar.
The 8802 is beautiful but I can’t sink anything with it. The spider has a funny insert like the ghost .. the 2 yes putters are heavy but I like them both, a centre shafted 2 ball has been in and out ( might be worth trying a press grip)
To be honest there are a few more .. and they really would look nice in my man cave. Why do I have so many ? Well I just like them and if I fancy something and I feel flush I will indulge..

I bought an Odessey Jailbird square to square a few months ago and can say my putting was great ….no 3 putts and stress free 2 puts….until yesterday when I had 41 putts…it was all those pesky 3 to 5 footers I was missing mainly left and then overcompensating to the right….hope it improves before Monday! 😬

The new putter effect has worn off.

The only solution is to buy a new putter….

Gone back to the Odyssey S2S......putted ok with it yesterday. It's a brain issue. Although....with this putter you are supposed to really put your hands forward.....doesn't work for me......more loft gets better results. This is kind of a summation of my life. Small hands...love big grips. Hands forward....nope. If having a bad day....just have a "lovely walk in nature".....die, you horrible people. Golf is full of things that work for some people and not for others.....

Just do it

Plenty have picked up a new putter and it’s changed them
