Puring an iron

Have you thought about the tour striker iron? Supposed to really help with iron striking. Not cheap mind. Thinking about finding one second hand myself.

Not a bad call, but I'd bypass the Tour Striker and go straight for the DST Compressor.. I've been using one for a few weeks now and my ball striking is much better.. Much less of a sweeper, and it really "feels" like I'm compressing the ball a lot better.. Nice shallow divots after the ball with the long irons, and deeper divots with the short irons...

A couple of years back I sat down after a round and analysed how good or bad I'd struck my irons in a round. I'd shot 4 over gross but felt only 3 iron shots had that lovely clicks sound and feel off the face.

i guess this begs the question, does it really matter as long as the score is good.

I'm aware of the difference between feel and real. But I know when I've hit a bad shot! The fact they they tend to go in the right direction, and around about the right distance regardless is immaterial.

I'm currently chunking.

Exactly.. I was talking to Huds yesterday, and IMO, good scoring is more about improving your bad shots than perfecting the good ones..

I meant you may feel as if you are keeping your head still but I would wager your head is further back at impact than it was at adress

Ah, I see.

Yes, I have been accused of this, although I always ignore fellow golfers advice, as most of it is tosh.
Not sure how to stop this. I also have awful tempo (far too fast) and my backswing is only half completed, I think I compensate by using a lot of natural power, rather than any kind of technique.

Try this quick drill to help you feel your weight moving towards the target through impact.
The idea is to hit the front ball without hitting the back ball. (You may want replace the back ball with a headcover to begin with).
This will help you take divots after the ball and not before it, assuming the ball position is correct

Very good

Much the same, been playing golf out of the heel 80% of the time and I'm off 10 mainly because my path, face, AoA etc are quite good. Finally had the realisation to just bloody stand a bit farther away from it and was finding the middle quite a bit

I think this is the perfect opportunity for a bit of time spent on a launch monitor with a clued up operator. You need to see what is happening at the moment of impact. Once you have that info, you can make a decision on what needs attention to improve the strike.

I had a few lessons with Bob and this drill, once perfected, got me striking the ball far better than I had previously.

Joff take care that the ball is the correct distance away and as Bob says maybe use something other than a ball at first until you are confident you won't hit it. I used the rubber tees that you normally put under the mat. That way if you catch it it doesn't matter. You're trying to take the club away in a smooth movement and then hit down on the ball, listen to the video and the impact sound Bob makes when the club hits the mat. That's the trick, thump the mat after you catch the ball. It was the sound that helped me repeat it. THUMP! The ball just sings up, away and with plenty of spin (if the other impact conditions are good).
