Protect or not to protect? That is the question.

Thought you might make an appearance. How's things down the road?

We have Crondon in the 1/4's of the Norman Plum in a few weeks time. I've been chosen as a reserve but with our "Open" major on the same day, I'm hoping I'm not needed as the Claret Jug would look really good in my office.

Crondon in the Norman plum are easily beatable. We beat them 3-0 at their place(Me+partner won 4+3) but they won 3-0 at our place. Legs difference was the same so if went down to what the pairings scored. First pairings both won 4+3 but their second pairing won by more than ours!

Best of luck whichever route you go down and if you get the valley as a host quarter final venue give me a shout.

I wouldn't really worry either way. Unfortunately, by posting this, the golf gods will have it in for you! You won't get cut in either comp, and will play badly in the match.

Sorry to break that to you.

Play the comps and play your best. If you don't and you play in the Cup and your team wins - and you play a significant part in that win - you will feel guilty about it because you know in your heart of hearts that you are cheating the other team - the fact that you have asked the question here betrays you. And don't entertain for a moment any thoughts of what they might be doing and use that thinking as rationale for your own misdeeds - keep your own side of the street clean - always better that way.

Top answer. Appreciated.

The last time I was due to play a competition and felt I might be bandit because I wa playing better than my handicap I entered a medal beforehand to try and get my handicap down, played dreadfully in the medal and got put up a stroke and then played inthe competiton and won it by a single stroke. :o The only one I have ever won.
That was a few years back and though my handicap has come down a little since then I am probably playing worse golf, you just can't know when your good and bad golf is going to come or at least not at my level you can't. I would play the competitions if you want to and what happens to your handicap happens to it.

If you get small cuts in the comps you could always use a supplementary card to try to get low enough to play in the singles.

Formats like this competition - and the Pearson Trophy for Ladies - actually encourages the sort of shady tactics that is so often complained about on here! And discourages improvement for those near the low cutoff. I have heard a couple of folk state that they don't want their handicap to go below a certain value because they really enjoy playing in a particular comp that has a low limit that they are close to! The popularity of some comps, and the changing nature of those that play golf, has often meant that the initial reason for comps to be set up has been superceded (of the handicap range change), so the criteria for running them should be examined occasionally imo.

I like the idea of having competitions for specific handicap ranges, but would sooner see that being the initial criteria for entry rather an ongoing one - perhaps with a limit as to how far below the 'initial' cutoff before becoming non-selectable (but selectable for another one!). If there are sufficient comps, covering the range of handicaps, then 'managing' handicaps would be far less likely to be a consideration!

So your last (and recent)competition result had you playing to 13 (normal parameters etc). ....and you are eligible for a singles slot

If the organiser has any balls at all you would be a shoe in for me unless all the other candidates played the comp and scored better.

Many of my reasons are closely tied in with elements of this thread - the others are simply common sense.

Well done.

Good man. Just the right thing to do. I suspect any disappointment that you have from not making the team (yet) is actually quite a bit less than you thought it would be. In fact you actually feel rather OK with the outcome and I suspect that you didn't think that that would be the case. Best to just be honest to yourself as you have been here - always the best way
