Protect or not to protect? That is the question.

I worried about playing in medals early season in case my handicap went UP as most folk I play with seem to think (mistakenly) that my handicap should be lower than it is - and they'd moan if they saw that it had gone up prior to a match. But I played - and managed - just - to play in the buffer each time.

Yep

I'm 2 away from another round of "you have got to be joking " etc etc

4 triples and 14 pars is still a 12 however you look at it through the system but partnering a consistent player in BB matches... :)

When a few bogeys slip through in comps it's +0.1 a time.

You and I the same. I so happen (because I've played so long I guess) to be an tough matchplay opponent - and I'm known in the club for that. But I'm utterly hopeless in medal as I too often (every round) will stick in at least two doubles and a treble. And when my 19h/cap buddy I playing well we are a very tough 4BBB or 4somes opponent. However a week or so ago I played in the July medal with no fear - as I'd been knocked out of all the K/O comps - and sure enough this time outside the buffer and up 0.1 to 10.5 and so 11.

So, it happened! I got the cut, down to 15 (got a 0.1 the following week, so back to 16) and was pulled out of the pairs team for the quarter final match. The captain must have had faith in me though as he put me in the singles which has a lower limit of 12 and is played off scratch.

I was bricking it on the first tee, I'd made the mistake of looking at the team sheet and it reminded me that I was giving away 3 shots straight from the get go. I then hit one right out the screws, split the fairway in two and with roll out must have hit it the best part of 300 yards. Nerves gone. Unfortunately, it nose dived a bit from then on. Adrenalin distance killing me twice on the 1st resulting in two lost balls, and a very dodgy bounce on the second meant I was 2 down thru 2, then 3 down thru 3. I had a tricky fast down hill putt on the 4th which ended up with us halving the hole.

Things really started to get to me when on 5, what was expected to be a lost ball for my opponent, ended up getting the luckiest kick out of the tree's which he then stuck to 2 foot and rolled in the birdie putt. 4 down thru 5. He blocked his tee shot on the par 3 6th, only to get the luckiest bounce off a slope and roll it up to 10 foot which he two putted for par, I on the other hand had the worst lie possible in a bunker meaning I could only make bogey. 5 down thru 6. I then went on to lose the 7th and stood on the 8th tee, 6 down and wanting the ground to swallow me up, although taking solace in the fact that I hadn't actually been playing that badly and my opponent was level par thru 7.

I got a bit lucky on 8 and won a hole back, and after an inspiring "jee up" from my captain, went on to win 9, 10, 11, halved 12 & 13, and won 14, going through those holes level par, which included a birdie on SI1. On the 15th tee, 2 down, I flushed my tee shot, and lost it, flushed my "reload" and lost it.. gave him the hole before we even got to the green, still perplexed as to where the hell the balls had gone.

With a lot of matches finished already a rather large group of people had gathered around the 16th tee block. My opponent had found the fringe at the back of the green on a 200 yard par 3, over water and with a horrible left to right wind. The yardage was uttered in a strategic conversation from my team...195 yards to pin. I pulled out a 5 iron and hit it as sweet as I've ever hit a 5 iron, it was one of those where you hold the pose for eternity, you know the ones. I'd stiffed it to a foot! He made me putt to stay in the match and I duly rolled it in for a bird. Back to 2 down.

Unfortunately I then topped the hell out of a 3 wood on the 17th tee into the water and then pulled my approach shot into the river. Gave him the match and walked in. Bloody game!!

Appreciate the kick you guys gave me though, in a weird kind of way it was a bit of a confidence booster for me, and then to actually get picked for the singles really topped it off. I didn't quite get the job done, but from being 6 down to taking him up 17...I'll take that.

Top stuff sir! And the reward for doing the right thing came to pass - as it usually does when you do the right thing! :)
