Problems with the 4 iron !!!

My 4 iron gets plenty of use but looking into a 7 wood now as I have space in my bag and it will give me more options.

Although I carry a 19* hybrid, I, like Brendy have never understood the "Love in" with hybrid clubs designed to replace a 4 iron (..... or 3 iron).

When I see a lot of folk play a 5 iron they make their usual swing and play the ball, on the whole, pretty well (Unless you are Fragger with that G15 monstrosity :smirk: ). When they play a 3 or 4 iron they try and hammer the skin off the ball. This, for me is the problem and no hybrid in the world will cure that. If they made their usual swing they wouldn't have the issue.

Another thing that gripes me is when people say they are "Easier to hit than a long iron"

How so?

If you hit a 4 iron fat, chances are you're going to hit a hybrid fat too. If you slice a 4 iron, chances are you'll slice the hybrid too..... Or am I missing something?

would there be any benefit in me getting a more game improvement 4iron,like a jpx825 maybe with 1/2 inch lopped of it !!!

i think im going to down this route , i was thinking last night , before i got the mp53s i could hit taylor made rac 3iron no problem

i really wish when i got custom fitted i had opted for a split set of irons , cos from 6 to PW are well suited but i struggle with 4-5 iron

hybrid

i'd recommend a 24 degree titleist 910h

The thing is with long irons you need to give them a enough power to getting them going properly, or they just die out of the sky.
Trying to apply the extra may be mucking your swing up

If you go with a hybrid you can swing it a easy but still get good distance.

The only thing i find with hybrids it does take a while to get used to them but once you do.....

I did this with my mp52s I replaced the 4 and 5 with the forged mx200 s ( I think that's what they are called?) and my distance were back in line down the bag and I had that extra forgiveness I was seeking.
The other thing is I set up for a little draw with my feet, what this actually does is keep my weight transfer or shift to a minimum and delivers the club through the ball better. ( it's a drill used to aid driving through the ball and not getting stuck on the back foot - bit like a ball under the heel of your back foot... )

I agree.... Buy mine!!! ;)

Well played Sir

If I can just get Harpo to trade it for the driver he has for sale... what am I on about, the 4 iron is on order, I just need rid of the the hybrid....

Gareth, coming back to your earlier point, hybrids are easier to hit as you don't have to go at them to get the ball up and the face is more forgiving and bouncier. They also obviously land softer from higher in the main.

Funny you say that, I 'won' one yesterday.

For the last month or so my 4 iron has been the only club in my bag I've not been confident of hitting well.
I have the 21° 910H so decided to try the 24° as well. The only thing that bothers me is the gap I had between 3h and 4i will now be 4h to 5i, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Would not trade for a hybrid but a tidy r7 425 and cash would be very tempting!

No problem! Unlike long irons, an 'easy' swing is will still give solid contact and simply produce a shorter shot and there's still the option of gripping down - not something I like.

have you hacked into my account or something, i'm sure i typed what region3 was replying to?

or am i misunderstanding was the hybrid region 3 won yours ?

i'm tempted to move to 24 hybrid myself been umming and arring about it for a few months would be interested in the distance gap you get between the 21 and 24?

So returned after a week off and played ok , back in love with the game :D

However I still can't hit my 4 iron , now off yellows I rarely use it but off whites we have 2 par 3s that a 4 iron is needed

So conundrum time do I replace with a hybrid or just lay up (lol) cos at the moment it's just not working

P.s if the answer is hybrid recommendations please !!!!

what's the problem you have with your 4-iron?
Hit it fat / thin?
Slice or wicked hook?

Advantage of a hybrid is they are easier to hit and tend to land softer so you can hold the green
but they are not ideal in windy conditions (the ball balloons) and you get extra distance with a 4-iron due to total distance (carry + roll).

Might be worth investigating what the issue is with your 4-iron before you spend good money on a hybrid.

I'm a hybrid kinda guy - I buried my ego with my burner 2.0 3 & 4 hybrid - and I love them. Can't do without them - longer par 3's become a breeze as the higher ball flight stops the shot quicker, but I'm still able to get on par 5's in two.... sometimes.

what lofts are your hybrids ??

I don't mind the gap too much from 3h to 4i as at that sort of distance I'm thinking near enough is good enough, but 4-5 is getting down to the sort of distance I expect to start hitting greens at. I'm hoping 3h-4h will be 10-15yds, which will leave 15-20yds from 4h to 5i.
I'm not keen on swinging easy and gripping down doesn't take much off so I normally try to hit a cut if I need to lose a few yards.

Off on a tangent a bit, I picked up (literally, not bought) a 20° Anser hybrid in a shop a few days ago and it looks like a 7 iron loft at address! I guess it's some sort of optical illusion with the lines in the face, but I bet it gives lots of confidence on the course.
