So returned after a week off and played ok , back in love with the game :D

However I still can't hit my 4 iron , now off yellows I rarely use it but off whites we have 2 par 3s that a 4 iron is needed

So conundrum time do I replace with a hybrid or just lay up (lol) cos at the moment it's just not working

P.s if the answer is hybrid recommendations please !!!!

The 4 iron is usually the club where people start to struggle. Most can hit a 5 iron half decent but a 4 is a common club to avoid.

My lay up distance is 170 yards, anything more than that and I don't go for the green, coincidentally that is also my 4 iron!

I do use my 4 iron but only off the fairway when laying up on a par 5 or long par 4 as all I have to do is hit it half decent and I get the distance I need.

How about a 5 wood ? just got the new Ping G25 and its a great club with high flight to drop down nicely on to long par 3 greens

I've always had trouble with the long-irons. I can pure them on the range, off the tee and ground, but on the course I just can't get them up, and always end up topping them about 100 yards.

I've recently took the plunge and bought a hybrid. It's a 20* Mizuno Fli-Hi, and it's just a god-send. From a bad lie, out of the rough or off the tee, it just gets the ball up there, so I've replaced my 3 & 4 irons with it. It's just made my game so much simpler and easier.

My 4 iron gets plenty of use......for hacking out of trees. Other than that I probably hit 2 out of 10 properly. I want to change it for a hybrid but feel like I'd be papering over the cracks.

I spent quiet a long time practicing with my 4 iron before I started hitting it well and not slicing it hard right.
Now I'm more than happy to hit it at long par 3 or as a layup club on some par 4s. Once I was hitting it well enough I had it tweaked to be half way between my 3 and 4 iron, not because I couldn't hit my 3 iron but I wanted to have 4 wedges and the gap wasn't that big between my 3 iron and 5 wood. I now hit my 4 iron a solid 210 yards in the summer and now hit it well enough to go for longer par 3s with it.
Practice with it hard and it will come to you I'm sure.

Ha, I'm going the other way, selling my 24* hybrid and sticking a 4 iron in.

Small note, a 24* hybrid tends to go a bit further in my experience. Easy to hit though with a lager window for error... Again just my experience.

Longer, lighter shaft for more swing speed = more distance than the equivalent iron with it's shorter, heavier and probably stiffer shaft...

I know why buddy, I am just scared to state a fact as some get all upset and talk a lot of ....

So easy to just keep saying "in my experience" and the like, Its a shame but its a forum, people flock for all sorts of reasons and some of them not constructive.

Back on topic I find that is I hit a good 4 iron its the best flight, shape of any club but I get flush perfection and love to watch it fly or I get Sally...

would there be any benefit in me getting a more game improvement 4iron,like a jpx825 maybe with 1/2 inch lopped of it !!!

Mizuno MP Fli Hi 4 iron replacement would be a good option. Dead easy to hit, I have 2 & 3 in my bag at the moment and play MP 53's. Should be able to pick one up on ebay cheap enough.

Saying that a 4 hybrid is a good option just need to find one that goes the right distance, no point having one that goes too far for what you want it to do.

Failing all of the above. take it out and show it all the drivers on the naughty step. Give it a damn good talking to and then see how it responds.

You also have to remember that in terms of loft, a 4 iron is almost what a three iron was 20 years ago. Could you play an old three iron without any issues ? If not then either do as Brendy suggests or go the Hybrid road (just to wind up Brendy ;) )

Perhaps a swap? :D

22-24* hybrid is a 4-iron equivalent and would seem, to me, to be the solution. Also a more versatile club overall.

Lol Dave with knobs on. I just love watching people reach for 'rescues' while in the rough and proceeding to rescue it all of 10 yards deeper into the barley.

I see that too, just because it says rescue on it doesnt mean it will automatically work. A hearty wedge or 8 iron out is 9/10 the best option.
