Realise that within the 'Rules of Golf' a single player has equal standing as any other group on the course.

Can The Committee overide this rule and state that a single player has no standing?

Basically I suppose if they can do this they can do what they want!

Can some one please tell me where in the rule book does it say a single player has the same standing as others.

On my course they don't mind singles but always saying you have to give way to others, this is not a local rule, but as I was told by the captian, " its taken from the rules of golf " so the rule has to stand.

Cheers

Del

In the latest version of the R&A rules you'll find it on page 28 in the etiquette section, priority on the course section, where it also does give local committees the authority to vary it. ;)

I play mostly alone or at least start off that way. I can only say that my current club has many members unaware of the rule change, apparently only low handicappers know the rules so i am often ignored when i state otherwise. Especially as this has been a topic of discussion when i play with others. I haven't had anyone try and bri=ush me aside while playing alone yet. Personally if a club decided to override this rule i would probably not be a member.

I think you all need to take a copy of the rules out with you and point them to page 28 and educate these dinosaurs. Mind you, you should be carrying a copy anyway especially in competitions.

Single Players, Competitions, How?

I meant that when you entered competitions you should have a set of the rules handy. I thought it was obviously implied (clearly not) that you'd be in a group if you were in a comp

Grabbed a copy of R&A from Navada Bobs yesterday, needed to do some reading, check out a couple of dodgey rules chucked at me, as suspected, they bloody cheated :o though I will be ready next time :D

On the single player note, me a my Pals got a couple of looks a couple of weeks back, as round took 5hrs, just as we were in no hurry and not holding anyone up, but let 2, yes 2 single guys through, so added a good 10-20mins to round, as one was on a Par 3. I have no probs with it, but cant stand waiting on a 4 ball who are wild of the Tee

Sorry Homer, My responce was a tad faceacious (or however its spealt). No offence intended, I did understand what you implied.

welshjim,

photocopy page 28 and hand out to doubters, together with the info that can can get a new copy of the up-to-date rules from R&A for no more than the postage

Gents,

"Priority on the Course
Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, priority on the course is determined by a group’s pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. The term “group” includes a single player."

The magic words are "Unless otherwise determined by the Committee"
If the committee have still to move out of the dark ages then that's absolutely fine by the R&A. The onus is on the committee to make their own interpretation of this statement which is in the Etiquette section of the R&A rules book. As it is in this section, rather than being in the rules section, it is only a guideline and not an actual rule.

So a it is up to each individual club to decide if they give single players the same standing as others.

another question i like to ask/add.

What the story on ladys days on the course?

Example few weeks ago.

The mate and myself headed up for a round just after work. There was no ladys on the first tee box so we played away. After 9holes we almost came to a stand still 3 groups of 4 balls (ladys) in front of us. So no why we where ever going to get through that lot. So we stood on and played away. 16th hole some more ladys had came up behind us (at this stage we where standing 5mins at least at every tee box). and said we have to play through. Yous do not have no priority on thursdays (ladys day). We just had a laugh about and let them play through. no point in falling out with them with only a few holes to go..

But intrested to know if that is the case do they priority on the course or just at the first tee box.

It all depends on what the club has within it's constitution. If the ladies are restricted members, then I don't see a problem with their "ladies day" giving them priority on the course.

Enlightened clubs actually allow ladies full membership so there is none of this old fashioned "ladies day" needed and hence no confusion as to who can play and when :D.
