Monthly stableford today and after hitting the ball so well for weeks since my lesson I was looking forward to it. Shame then that I chose today to swing like a dog and hit the ball as badly as I have done for a while. 32 points (15 out 17 back). One under my handicap after 5 holes then had my customary nightmare at our short 6th for a no score and the same on the shortest hole on the course (8th).

The back nine wasn't much better and I struggled all day off the tee and was out of position on virtually every hole. So why the title. Well I came 9th in my division and as CSS went out to 71 there was no damage to the handicap. I chipped a little better and putted well but the big positive is I found a way for the most part to keep the scoreboard ticking over. If I can swing that badly and still get it round, it bodes well for when the game is back on song. It wasn't what I was looking for in the first comp of the year but in the past it would have been a real horror show.

Definitely a glass 1/2 full sort of result. The downside is I don't understand where the swing went especially as I was hitting okay warming up and played half decent yesterday. I think its all about tempo and overswing but we'll graft it out on the range this week and come back ready for business next weekend. Funny how out of the face of adversity you can see positives

PS - for those of you now suffering from shock at the new positive and chilled Homer I apologise

I had my own mare on the course today, 5 over handicap with a 9 (nine) on our par 4 8th.

You're not alone on the driving range working on drills this week:whistle:

The galling thing was 36 won the division and I cocked up two par 3's. They are my two nemesis holes but even so, it was there for the taking today. Still there will be better ball striking days and less reward and at least I hit the buffer so no 0.1 back. Blue Mountain and Downshire here I come. Wonder if I can get away with telling my manager I have to leave early all week as I've an appointment with a 6 iron and a bucket of balls

I haven't played golf this weekend at all. I have spent about 7 hours practicing my new swing though. To me, I can't see it working on the golf course yet. It takes a while to have confidence in a swing change, and I know if I take it on the course too soon, I will not trust it, and in doing so, it will break down. I prefer to put a lot of range time in before, so that when (if) I hit the course, the swing is now my natural one.

I trusted it and it seemed to be working ok on the practice ground. I think the issue was that I got into "comp mode" got too intense especially when I got two under my handicap after 3 without hitting a decent shot. In the end it got too quick and too long and brought out all the old faults. It's in there but perhaps you're right and I'm not quite ready to produce it in competitive circumstances

32 points in wet/Winter conditions is nothing to be shiffed at Homer. OK 36 won and "if" this and that you may have won but - you didn't! I know you're being semi-positive about it but I wouldn't be knocking myself at all coming in with 32 in the Winter.
I realise the swing wasn't where you wanted it but that happens to the best players. All you can do is play with what you have on the day. And if hitting it like a Dog gets you 32 points then that's a good result.
