playing winter golf

No medals/comps/cuts at my club from Oct - March/April.

Some of the greens you all play on must be well crap if a well struck iron shot wont stop on them ?

Either that, or you aint hitting the ball right :D

As far as Winter v Summer.......cmon, get real, there is only one winner.
The day I call putting 3 layers on, a hat, golf mitts, to tee up off a mat, to a sodden/frozen fairway, and then play to a temp green, .....and call it fun, will be the day I take up another sport.

Summer evening, Polo shirt weather, and a beer on the Clubhouse balcony post round.........now thats enjoyment.

If your greens are so firm in the summer that you can't pitch on most of them and hold the ball then they are either poorly designed and/ or maintained or you aren't striking it very well.

If it's the latter then you will probably have shots to play with anyway.

chuckled at that one RB :D

Winter golf is easier. Patchy rough that won't grow, soft fairways make them play wider, preferred lies and greens like dartboards. Make hay while the sun [doesn't] shine.

Fully agree. Hard fast fairways in the summer play so tight at our course, and if you miss them you are in the heather. We don't go in for a lot of semi rough ! :( :(

Now you tell me about the NO semi rough at your place. What am I supposed to do at the GM meet now?

As it looks like i am only be going to hit the golf ball once perhaps i should get me some of those Dunlop quadra balls the guys were on about the other week :( :(

Damn. I only took up golf in September and have been slowly improving my scores. I was hoping they were going to tumble when the good weather comes. Apparently not :(

no chance, summer golf is definately more technical, and the snaphook bounces on a rock hard fairway are a killer

Tell me :( :(

My classic hook off the tee has been stopping before the chuff recently due to the heavy ground!!

I find Summer golf much easier for some reason, maybe I'm odd, or all the extra layers are half my body weight

Certainly don't have a problem stopping balls on the green, even long irons.
Having said that our greens are quite slow, even in Summer.

I don't necessarily think that golf in one season is any harder or easier than another - you just need to adapt the way you play according to the conditions. Learning new skills perhaps. It's all part of the game.

I'm just happy that I am still reasonably fit enough to be able to get out there in the fresh air, in good company, and enjoy the game I love.

There again, I'm getting to the stage where I'm happy just to wake up each morning :D

Easily pleased :D :D

I'm assuming there's a reason scores at my place are higher during comps in the winter but I can't quite put my finger on it :D we had reductions only in our medal on Sunday and that never happens in the summer.

Reading the replies I'm kind of thinking the way your course is setup in the winter depends on how you feel about winter golf. Our course is setup exactly the same all year and as a result, it plays longer. If our course had the tees moved forward to the front of the tee boxes then I guess I'd be of the opinion winter golf was easier. I'd love to be firing at soft greens with my wedges, how much fun would that be? As it is on Sunday I was going at greens with 4 & 5 irons. On our 15th which was slightly into the wind I hit Driver - 3W as well as I could and still had a 40 pitch. In summer I go at that green with 8 or 9 iron.

In the words of Meatloaf, two out of three ain't bad ! I apologise for my company now Leftie :D

I don't mind playing winter golf in competitions as we are on full courses all year so its still a way of trying to get cut and there is a purpose to being there. Not such a fan of roll ups when it has been hurling it down all night and the course is wet and playing the full length and its cold or windy. Would rather go to the range and work on my swing a bit.

Mind you after all the snow I'm trying to play as much as I can irrespective of the weather to try and catch up a bit. I feel like I've really missed out in the last six weeks. The range is good but I've found a renewed vigour for getting out and chopping it round
