what’s the penalty for playing the wrong ball for myself and if the other player plays with my ball?

if it's a match the first to play the wrong ball looses the hole.

strokeplay it's a 2 shot penalty and you are required to 'correct' by playing from the correct place. if the other player also plays the wrong ball the same applies to him.

things get complicated if, for example, preferred lies are in place and you pick clean and place the 'wrong ball' before playing it....but that's another issue.

there are also some exceptional situations where you aren't penalised - see exceptions to rule 15-3
