My friends and I always play off the whites at our place, we do so allowing us to be more prepared for medals and make the course a wee bit more challenging.
At the weekend though I played Duddingston with a friend and I automatically teed up on the 1st at the whites, only to be told that they are strictly for medals and I'd have to move my ball to the yellows.

so, who plays off the whites as a matter of course or do you leave them for comps?

Whites are available for members play. Societies play off yellows.

That said, the whites move back anything up to 60 yards for the comps. So normal whites aren't 'whites'.

Our club changed the rule about white tees a couple of years ago to make every day play ok off the whites. The head greenkeeper took his arse in his hand and just put all the white blocks out in line with the yellow boxes. Spelt the beginning of the end of that greenkeeper.

There are only 50 or so max at our club who always play off the whites in daily play. Most members are there for some fun so will tee it up off the "easier" yellow tees.

i was always under the impressions whites were comp use only, ideally to make comps more challenging so the course was different.

If your going to play whites on a daily basis, they may aswell just put comps off of yellows.

annoys me we not allowed to play of whites unless comps,

when of yellows i hit irons etc of the tees where there is significant difference in length so i play so same yardage for second shots

still annoying

I will play off the whites at Bearwood no problem. We played off the whites at Gainsborough last week, again no problem. Most courses you visit as a green fee payer insist that you play off the yellows. Why don't they reduce the green fee as you are not playing the "whole" course???

Whites are for comps only at ours. Don't have a problem with this. It gives the comps more status and if we had the choice everyone would play off the whites all the time and we'd end up with virtually unused "tees of the day".

Pyrford is play from where you want. We run one competition every two months from the yellows for the seniors to keep their handicaps as the carries from some of the back tees are too much for them.

I was asked on the Eden course at St.Andrews if I wanted to play from the back whites and most of the new courses up there leave it up to you to choose where you play from.

Then again I once played Arbroath and the pro came out of his shop to watch me tee off the 1st and ensure I played off the yellows. So I did. For that hole. Played the remaining 17 off the whites to the delight of one of the greenkeepers who thought he was an arse and then let him know at the end of the round what I'd done.

I can see both sides of the argument though - if you pay a membership of a club, do you not deserve to have the best tees for your use?

Im with you on pair membership so no restrictions, but im a strong beleiver whites should be comps only. its like playing a different course. to be playing the same tee all the time would be boring, and the longer course for comps makes me think more which is good. Driver / Wedge par 4's become driver 8 irons or more... makes the holes play totally different.

In comps - whites only.

On a weekend members could play off whites.

The club also experimented to allow member to be able to play off the whites during the week but after a certain number of weeks this was rescinded as the tee boxes were showing signs of wear.

Whites are only for Comps/Medals at my track, strictly.

I like it to be honest, it keeps Competition play as something 'elite', and bearing in mind that the Whites put you back 30/40yds or more on quite a few holes, you 'earn' your Handicap reduction well & truly.

Perhaps why our course handicaps are recognised locally as at least 2/3 shots below a lot of other courses around here, or anywhere for that matter.

If you play at BL, you can play off the blacks if you want. I know a couple of guys who routinely do so.

The sensible way is to do what some US courses do. The correct tee is based on your ability, the better you are, the further back you can play.

Playing Pings puts you off the red tees automatically, obviously.

If the hole always plays the same then you need to question a) the course design and b) your greenkeeper.

The blocks should be moved about regularly anyway to preserve teeing area. The pins will also be changed which even on a course with small greens like ours can mean up to 40yds difference in length.

im finding lately with holes playing short due to a lot of run it can become boring. ours greens are massive by any means, but most of the pay 4's are driver then either a 9i/wedge/lob wedge in. playing these on a daily/weekly basis can become boring. the idea of whites means for that comp i have to totally adjust my game for that day, to account for longer less accurate shots in. as someone else said it makes your handicap harder to work for and a cut is well deserved.

all courses ive been a member at have had rules that whites are comps only. and i like it that way.

So you have nothing to compare with.

BTW It's not compulsory to play off our whites for a knock around, you can choose yellows if it's that boring.

;)
