Player's ball played by another

Can't find an answer to this using the Rules App
From the tee Player A takes a provisional but cannot find the first ball as it has been mistakingly played to the green, by Player B. This is only discovered after A plays his provisional to the green. What are his options?
This happened to me today in a competition.

Drive was into sun, so nobody saw where my drive went. The other 2 chaps went and played their second shots, then helped my look for mine with no success.

Then, on the green, one of the guys noticed he had played my ball 😤

This was the rule in 1999, but not sure if it has been amended since, My interpretation of this was (see last couple of lines) once the 5 minutes was up (now 3 mins), even if it was certain another player had played a wrong ball, the innocent players ball was deemed lost

Yeah, my ball was lost as it was identified after 3 minutes. Had he checked the ball before he played it, I'd have been OK

It is there now too, in the form of Known or Virtually Certain/3 - Player Unaware Ball Played by Another Player. All that has changed is 5 mins is now 3 mins.

How many times did he apologise to you afterwards?? I'm guessing not enough.
I wasn't overly annoyed. Only 4th hole, but I already knew it was going to be one of those days as I started 1, 2, 1 points. However, after 1 point on the 5th, I did rally a little bit by going 4, 3, 3, 2, 3, 3, 2.

Of course you did... do you normally give up mentally after dropping only 2 points in the first three holes?? That's nothing!

I guess the fact that Player A's ball found within three minutes but not positively identified by Player A or Player B as being A's is deemed lost when 3 minutes are up - regardless of what happens next. The simple fact of finding within 3 minutes the ball that is Player A's is not sufficient under the rules for it got be deemed 'found'. It is not 'found' until it is identified - and if not identified within 3 minutes it is 'lost'

On reflection - don't think I'm right there...

Na, it is more that I felt my swing was all over the place and so I didn't sense I had a good run of holes in me. But, birdie the 6th, and it is funny how much easier it is to tidy up the card. Until the next disaster, which happened on 13th, and then arrives a run of really bad holes again.
