Woods are in the naughty step so I played just irons today

Got round 9 holes in 1hr 15!!! It's amazing what not looking for lost balls and taking 2/3 off the tee will save you in time

Probably had my most consistent round since I started playing!!!

Still feel like I should play woods though

I rarely judge the quality of a round by the time it takes... but that's another subject.

I do like playing irons off tees but the fun I get from taking a 3 wood or a driver and hitting it well is hard to compare. I can belt my 4 iron a fair distance but nothin beats a 230+ yard 3 wood or a long drive out the middle when it comes to tee shots.

I agree, it feels wrong but found myself being far more accurate

at the moment i only actually use my driver on 3 holes at my local course, + 1 3 wood . much easier in using a 2 iron or 4 iron on all holes under 400 yards + on par 5's as i lay up. misses are smaller and has dramatically improved my FIR

That's kind of what I was attempting, losing balls off the tee was killing my score, need to find a balance, my 3 wood is ok, I hit more fairways and its not much shorter than my driver

Maybe a low lofted 3 wood from the tee and a 5 wood for fairways is the answer

I stopped using my driver on danger holes.
I use a 3 hybrid, it is very accurate & long enough.
My consistency is better & my round scores are lower as a result.

I love the irons only approach, and I have only just put my hybrids back in the bag! Accuracy is what it's all about for me, so I am in no rush to add my woods and driver to my bag. Don't get me wrong, when I get proper consistency they will be back, but I am in no hurry.

I'm currently liking this approach

Will stick to practicing with my woods at the range, what's odd is my 3 wood used to be my go to club, but as my iron striking has improved my 3 wood has begun to fail me

I've opted to ditch the woods until autumn, in competitions as well, because our second cut of rough is now just ludicrous. It's a minimum of knee high, waist high in places, and really, really thick. Finding a ball in it is now an impossibility. Our fairways are firm, so even good shots are being punished.

The result is that I have dug out a 1 iron and bought myself a new 2 iron, and I'm far more consistent as a consequence. As for distance off the tee, I don't really see it as a huge issue, because of the additional roll we are getting on drier fairways. I'm hitting no more than one club more into most greens. I don't especially enjoy hitting irons all the way round but I simply cannot stand looking for balls on every other hole.

As for the rough? I suspect the club is losing big revenue from visiting golfers. I have spoken to many, most of whom have been united in their opinion - the course is in great nick but the rough is a joke. I spoke to one who was as Carnoustie in 1999, and he was adamant that the rough there simply did not compare to ours.

That's what I got fed up of, well that and it costing 1 or 2 penalty shots every other hole

You can stand on the high points on our course and all you can see all around are groups looking for balls. It really is ridiculous.

I know our lower handicap golfers love the challenge. For everyone else it's just too difficult, as there is no bail out anywhere. Every shot has you under pressure and, to be honest, when the wind blows it's just carnage.

In the middle of the 1975 drought I went out in a mid week medal with a 2,4,6,7,8,9,W,SI and putter.
Scored 67 and broke the course record. The course was playing ultra fast and bumpy. It was a heathland course so even if the rough was non existent the heather was very tough and easy to find.
