Ping go "Frankenwood"..

Think you'll see more of this in the near future from others too.

I see Callaway are already taking it step further with the Xhot 2 version, which they are all but calling a 2 wood (12.5 degree loft 250cc head but driver length shaft).

Seems to be a move towards lower spin and more loft, another fad or progress?

Is it not the longer shaft that causes the control issues?

I'm thinking of dropping my driver for a strong 3w,I'm swaying towards the Cally x hot or Adams speedline. Anyone use either?

I really want to like the Adams but that bloody slot in the top ruins it for me.
I know looks aren't everything but ....??

It sounds as though the development came solely from what Mickelson wanted, which was a smaller, workable head, low spin but as much distance as possible, the only way to get the distance was to have the shaft length.

How that translates to us amateurs is open to interpretation I guess, I know for me I certainly dont want a longer shaft so would be guarded against going that route

I think the Karsten irons are also following the trend of strong lofts, so it does look like they are trying to make sure they have clubs available that match other competitors offerings too.

Think such a club was called a "brassie" (2-wood) in times of yore. I believe that Nick Faldo used such a club for driving for at least part of his career. :fore:

Interesting move and I guess one of the really untapped areas left for manufacturers to explore. I am happy with the G25 driver and would prefer my 3 and 5 woods but I can see how these new clubs will get a big following

spoke to the guy in my local American golf at the weekend. I asked him did they have the 3 deep. unfortunately they had sold out.

he did tell me that many who bought it were struggling to hit it. mainly off the ground. at 14.5 I am not surprised many struggle with it.

Really tempted by a 3 deep or one of these pings.

Looks like a bit of history repeating itself. They are going back to classic lofts and smaller heads. I suspect an amature would get more from this by cutting it to 43.5-44" . I love a smaller headed driver but, I have the cleveland classic strong 3 and that is pretty good and quite long so I personally cannot see myself buying one, but would not mind giving it a runout.

Anyone got a spare 400 quid stashed..?

OK, it'll be in the shops around £350 but, come on they're having a laugh aren't they..?

Compared to the 3deep which is already sub £100 and the new XHot 2 Deep at £170ish, Titleist FD sub £200, everyone else with a deep 3 wood is charging fairway wood prices, Ping seem to think they can charge top end Driver prices - doesnt make a dot of sense to me and cant see them selling many at that price
