Just read the piece about this...

Looks a bit more like the i200 from the back... then I noticed £150 per iron. Wow! (Ok, I know they'll be about for a bit less than that, but wow again!)

Maybe that's why you don't get 9 irons in a set any more, folk would pass out in the shop!

Anyone know why they have leapt from G400 to G700? Should there not be a 500 and 600 in between? There is usually some logic in numbering, a sequence of some sort.

They actually look really nice. Nicer than the G400 anyway. This seems a bit quick after the G400s came out though? Swear that was only a couple of months back.

They were doing well but then they messed it all up when the G series came out. G5 > G10 > G15 > G20 > G25 > G30 > G? > G400??

They aren't replacements for the G400- they are replacing the Gmax range. So they are super game improvement clubs. As far as I am aware there is no G400 Max irons, so they will sit alongside the G400 range.

I thought G400 was game improvement as well though. I thought all of their stuff with a 'G' in front was game improvement in fact?

Yep G400 is game improvement. The GMax was super game improvement, the G700 is also super game improvement. So they are bigger heads, stronger lofts and the CG is lower and further back to help launch the ball. It is sort of like the G400 on steroids.

Sounds pretty ridiculous but fair enough. I thought game improvement was game improvement, never mind super game improvement! I tried the G400s on a free fitting and they seemed pretty huge, so if these are bigger they might as well be shovels with Ping written on.

Is stronger lofts really a game improver?

Yes your "9" iron will go further, but new golfers will struggle to hit their '6' iron which in reality is 4 or even a 3

I agree. It's just mind game really. My current and previous sets were both Callaway, where their 5 iron is 23° and I do struggle a bit to hit it well. But yes, people will hit their 8 iron further when it's a seven iron with '8' written on it.

yes stronger lofts are a game improvement club. they have the loft help with distance and the moi to get the ball in the air. this is why players irons are the opposite

But how does i improve your game when your 5 and 6 irons are unhittable because you are actually hitting a 3 or 4 iron which beginner will struggle with anyway. Why not have a full set with regular lofts and just hit a lower number. It's a complete nonsense to get people to buy new irons because they go 15-20 yards further. In reality they are exactly the same as your old clubs just with different number painted on

The shaft length will still be different though, the majority of people struggle to hit a 3 irons because of the length of the shaft. The other issue is being able to launch the ball, the 5 in GI irons may be the same loft as the 3 in blades but the CG is a lot lower and further back so it is easier to launch. Then add the size of the head and the perimeter weighting and it becomes a lot easier to hit. Loft is not everything.

Of course, but given that why not keep the lofts as they were and change the rest of it as you say.

It may be part game improvement but to me it definitely seems like they try and get sales by promising more distance

if they kept the lofts the same you would hit your 7 iron as high as a 9 iron. the lofts are not strong to create distance. they are strong to keep the ball down.. watch a review on you tube on the TM iron range. the 29 degree m2 7 iron launches at the same height as a p770 witch is 33 degree. how is that possible? its because the game improvement iron is giving loads of help to get the ball in the air.

you can also look at the review on the new titleist range. the 31 degree ap3 launches higher than the 34 degree ap2

Thanks for that, but a genuine question, what is wrong with hitting the ball high? I hit my irons incredibly high, and pretty long. Though is an issue in high winds, I find it quite an advantage. My irons stop pretty sharpish. Because I don't get any roll my distance is almost all carry so hitting over bunkers or water hazards is no issue

£150 per iron is pretty much the going rate now unfortunately give or take £10-£20. 7 irons in a set = £1050, similar to the Callaway Epic or TM P770/P790 etc

Interesting product from Ping and one with a clear market in hand but clearly at a cost. I don't think Ping or any of the top brands really make a bad club and so it'll do what it's intended to do. Whether people will really want to pay that much would be the first question. As for them not controlling the longer irons with reduced lofts, surely hybrids would offer a different alternative and no doubt they'll be some easy to hit ones as part of the range
