Philip Seymour Hoffman Dead

Another succumbs to drugs at a young age

Do these people not see the dangers of the stuff.

Very good actor

Was gonna post this up earlier but got tied up with the kids. From what I've read was found in his apartment needle hanging out his arm and an open bag of heroin next to him.

That's a dark habit to have, and one he struggled with before a loss for his wife and 3 young kids

Found dead aged 46 in an apartment in Manhattan. Way to young to be taken and a great talent as well. Drug overdose is what is being reported.

Taken or killed himself? Unfortunately the addict who has been clean for 20+yrs knows that there is a great risk of him killing himself if he relapses - the fall is quicker and deeper - and sometimes you don't manage to stop yourself going over the edge of the cliff. Sad to to hear of any death through drugs or alcohol - and as it was as a result of a relapse this will be very sad and painful to those who loved him. RIP sir!

Long standing issue for him clean for something like 23years then had a relapse few months back, went into rehab but sadly looks like his addiction became too much and took hold again.

Really all news to me matey. Makes you wonder if you are ever totally free of an addiction, if somebody with his wealth succumbs then what hope is there for the bulk of us

I don't think you can ever be free of any addiction especially with the narcotic substances, it can take the simplest thing to cause a bad day and then when looking for the escape from that mood the simple out for them is the drugs. I think its a case some simply through routine find a way to manage their desire day by day.

Until it's less glamourised by people then other people with money will continue to take it.

True it does seem to be glorified by certain parties. Rock/Heavy metal musicians are big time offenders of this

When you have campaign groups trying to legalise all drugs then you know there is something wrong with some people

People have a choice in life - people aren't forced to take these hard drugs - they know it's addictive , they know it can kill and they still do it.

It's a shame people still make those choices and at times they are selfish choices - the sympathy is reserved for the loved ones they leave behind ( obviously there are exceptional cases with children being born addicted etc )

Many great performances in many great films. For such a unique looking guy, he played very varied roles.

His performance in the Big Lebowski always made me laugh out loud.

I'd heard off him but didn't know if I'd seen any off his films. Think I saw 3 or 4 off them after checking IMDB, but I wouldn't say I ever noticed him in a film :O

Sad that someone seemingly with so much talent has died.

Is it just me who has never heard of him?

Second story on BBC news seems a bit OOT.

Vaguely heard of him - not seen any of the films he's been in that have been mentioned. Agree with the OTT - an addict who happened to be an actor. But an addict nonetheless - and often not a lot of 'choice' for addicts once they relapse in a serious way. And there is much loss of young life and talent to drugs and drink - we (media) make too much fuss over those who put themselves in the spotlight - film actor? OK - sad but no bigger deal than any such death.
