Advice please, looking to get my son a pc specifically for gaming.

Haven’t got a clue were to start, don’t really want to go to PC World and be told which pc is best for gaming without at least having a bit of knowledge.

Anyone seriously into gaming that can at least give me some idea of were to start and what sales bluff to avoid.

Cheers

Starting from scratch, budget not an issue, one off opportunity for him.

I built a few computers to help get some extra cash while I was at uni, if we are talking serious gaming and budget isn't an issue then there are custom build gaming pc companies out there which i'd go with. If you are up to putting it together yourself you can save a fair bit (plus know exactly whats in there). There is a bit of a need to customise to fit best the kind of game your son plays.

Seriously stay away from the "gaming pc's" that alot of the bigger places put out, alot of them are not really built to use the power thats put in there, and they skimp on the components that people don't know much about.

Feel free to drop me a message if you have any questions.

^^^ This.

I've been building PC's for 20 years, you can save a decent amount doing that, although some of the online builds are getting pretty good value for your money nowadays.

Personally I'd always build, but that's not for everyone, knowing when to go for cutting edge or not depends on the games your lad will be playing and and what resolution. Will he be wanting max performance using a 144mhz/freesync monitor at 2560x1440 with a 1ms response time? (Good for online FPS such as Cod etc.) If so then you need to spec for that, but if not then you could end up wasting a lot of money.

Feel free to ask or give more details about what games he'll be playing.

First off I wouldn't go to PC world, but a more specialist retailer online. As someone has already mentioned they will dazzle you with things that everyone knows like processing power lots of RAM, high power graphic cards more designed for graphic design than high power gaming etc, but the things that are not so well known about will be scrimped on to keep the price down so you think you are getting a great offer.

If you can afford it then look for a local PC shop that will build you exactly what you are looking for. I've always been a big believer in building to the best spec that your budget allows as it is not going to be outdated as fast where you end up playing the latest games at a lower setting to make them run correctly.

Look at the high street PC shops like you would American Golf Discount. Is the person serving you really that knowledgeable about what they are selling, or are they someone who needed a job and got a break.

Saving up the last of the cash for my new pc right now.

Firstly depends on the resolution and frame rates you wish to play games at.

A basic 1080p 60hz monitor needs very little. My i7 920 rig from 2009 with a £140 graphics card in could do frame rates up to 144hz at 1080p for games like counterstrike and rocket league.

I’m aiming for a 1440p rig over 60hz so looking at a new coffee lake i5 8700k.

The basic rig and case will cost about £800 if I use parts fro my old build like my old graphics card, SSDs and monitor.

I aim to add a new card and monitor in a couple of years time to go to 1440p but those two parts cost over £1300 together!

My advice is to just go on Scan.co.uk, cyberpowersystems or pcspecialist and spec out a basic gaming PC in your budget.

Avoid i3 based builds except for coffeelake if used for gaming.

Need any more help give me a should, I’m planning to build my own rig and have been researching since Xmas.

As for the rest of you, let’s see your rigs!

My old one, before I killed it, had turned into a mess. My next one will use all the lessons I learnt from this rig.
