Go for it every single time. As Bob says you could be left wondering what if. How are you going to get better if you dont put yourself under pressure to pull off the big shots ? Are you always going to pussy out of taking them on or are you going to push yourself to see how good you can get ? A chance of reaching a par 5 in 2 with no real drawbacks is an absolute must go for it situation.

I love how everyone is divided on this one. I want to just rip the 3 wood into the green but know the safe option is long iron, short wedge to pin and go for birdie putt.


What I actually did was take my 3 wood, pull it left into the trees. Took another two to get onto the green and then two putted for a 6-5 for 2 points.

Steve, I was reading this and thinking, after playing with you at Blackmoor, you pulled the 3wood out and dumped it on the green.

I've always been cautious in my approach and a few weeks ago I would have said lay up to 100yds. However, over the last few weeks I'm starting to think I'm a good enough player not to be taking the safe option all the time so my ne philosophy is if my tee shot is good enough I'll go for it, it's early days however so may be changing my mind again in a few weeks.

We have a hole almost exactly like this. For me the current best option is a steady drive, 5i iron up to wedge distance (short of the fairway bunker) and two putt. Gone from missing a score each time to getting pars / bogey every time

Its still a 2 shot hole for me so 3 or even 4 points in the bag!! It will be the next hole to drop to one shot if / when I improve my H/C

However thats just in comps - in friendly rounds I am now trying to get there in 2 with the 3 wood second shot but having very limited success so will not be pulling that out in any comp soon.

There's got to be a dozen different ways to play that hole.
It favours the power-fade player for sure, driver at the left bunkers, 3 wood left of the green, but a pull or slice could be costly.
Unless you pull it, driver is the way to go, then a mid-iron would be the safe option.
The thing about these holes i.m.o. is that 20 yards short is as good as in the greenside bunker, unless you are top-notch out of the sand.
You'd be ever so close 3w - hybrid, just like you played the 5th (?) or is it longer?

Then take a drop 'cos you are in an unplayable lie, fat your chip, over hit the next one 'cos you didn't want to fat it again did you and then three putt for a nice fat snowman and 0 points.

I've done this loads of times on the 5th at Bearwood Lakes and it's usually followed by the old "putterus helicopterus"

Hmmm, food for thought last night. We have 4 par 5s at our place. My tee shots on 2 and 15 were good enough to go for the green so I did. I missed both right into the rough, couldn't control my chip and only made 5s. On 4 and 18 I laid up (4 because I had to and 18 because I wasn't prepared to risk taking on the water. Result: 2 birdies.

Its shorter than the 5th Dave. If you remember it's the dogleg right. Drive off towards 3 bunkers along the left side of the fairway leaving yourself a shot to the green over the walkway which is 70 yards infront of you. Green guarded by OOB right and bunker front right of green.

Always feel I should go for this green but like others have said, taking long iron then a short wedge leaving birdie opportunity is probably the better/ safer / percentage play option.

If the 3w is a normal shot and you are reasonably confident then that should always be the shot!

It's just as easy to make a hash of the layup...nothing worse than hitting an iron and knifing the wedge...never take for granted that the layup will make it easier!

My best friend said a few years ago that he had never had an eagle in 20 years of golf...I said that's because you never go for it in two!! He's had a few since now and has gone from 21 to 11. Just a thought...

500 yard par 5 today.
Wind behind so hybrid off the tee to.stay on the fairway
250 to go, 4 wood going sideways so it's either another hybrid and see if it gets close or 6 iron/wedge.
I decide to go for it. Push hybrid shot right into deep clag, lose ball, blob hole.
Should have played safe and got.the par..........

I'd go for it. As it is a shot hole even a 7 gives you a point and if you can get it close and chip and putt for birdie, nett eagle then muchos points

Then again, I'd say a 1 putt birdie (on for 3) net eagle for 4 points has got to be fairly glory-ish!

Fingers crossed you hit a good short wedge to get on in 3 and a solid putt for birdie.

After all this chat about what I should have done on this par 5 I'm still non the wiser!
