Par 5 questions??

Got onto our par 5 16th yesterday and felt like I was in a right dilemma.

The scenario is you've got your drive away down the fairway and have a good line into the green. Your distance from the green is your 3 wood distance. Now as your playing stableford you get a shot here too. (sorry bob!)

Its OOB all down the right hand side. Left is fine apart from trees to keep out of. your frame of mind is good, OOB right isn't really an issue as only a really bad shot brings it into play. Again the trees are only there to punish you for a bad shot.

So your not sure which is the best option to get the most points out of the hole. Risk and reward hole is a good way to describe it.

What would you do?

Pull my hybrid out and welly it hard as I can cos I dont got on too well with my 3 wood

It depends if I needed the score.

If I had a nice card going, then 5i, wedge, two putts and 3 points in the bag.

If I was chasing the buffer zone, then 3w and hope to get the birdie.

Iron down to wedge distance . hopefuly a good wedge close to set up a birdie putt , at worse 2 putts for tidy easy 3 points ......

It depends if I needed the score.

THis is the my choice. Don't often go for a par5 in 2 unless I've hit a screamer of a drive and I'm within iron distance. Anything more is potentially asking for trouble and I'm never unhappy with a 3 pointer!!

I can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory from anywhere so 3 wood it is for me, I would aim straight and try and carve it away from trouble a touch. If it goes straight, great, if it does turn a little then at least its away from OOB.

Check with RickG's gps if it's a big or a little 3 wood, rip it on the green and just miss the eagle

If as you say there's no real trouble lake, tight OOB, stream etc, go for it.
If you lay up and dont get up and down for birdie, you'll spend the next half an hour thinking 'what if'.
Golf is a sport to be enjoyed so get out the 3 wood and have fun

If the only punishment is for a bad shot hit offline. Go for it, regardless of the club needed to get there.

It would depend on what trouble there is at the front - bunkers etc.

I would probably hit a hybrid, ideally leaving myself with a little pitch to try and get up and down for 4 points or just a pitch and a couple of putts and an easy 3 pointer.

Only time I go for the green is if I'm playing against a knob with an R11 driver and a fairway wood, who has just topped his 2nd 30 yards, yet still thinks he's the dogs!

Last week I played 3 wood and then nailed my good old hybrid to the middle of the green, just short on the eagle putt and tapped in for a birdie

It's unusual for opponents to get to me - strange one

My way of playing it would probably be a 3 wood to about 10 feet to set myself up for a 3 putt par.

I'd think to myself, knock an iron down, chip it close and try for a birdie putt.

I'd then proceed to pull the 3 wood, swing wildly and horse it OOB or into the trees.

Swear.

Put the 3 wood away.

Put a line through the scorecard.

Move on to the next.

Sounds not disimilar to our 13th, 481 yard SI 12 where I now get a shot. OOB along the right, small copse left about 80 yards short of green and medium sized bunker about same distance out on the right. Have been playing a conservative strategy with 5 iron short of copse/bunker and wedge to make a safe par. Well a couple of weeks back in a comp I hit my best drive of the day and got tempted. Went for my 5 wood, which has been really reliable recently. Result - low thinned slice OOB.

So I'd say 5 iron, wedge. Until I get my nerve back.

providing there is no tricky nasty bunkers, and any cabbage/danger is easy to carry with a bad shot, Rip the 3wood all day long. If there are any bunkers that would come into play if i catch the ball a bit fat that could risk the par, then 5i & wedge.

What you've got to do is this;

Try and slide a 5 iron at the left edge of the green (to leave a wedge) except pull it madly into the area of trees before the hump. Then proceed to hit GW through the gap to 75 yards, SW to 12 foot and 2 putt for a disappointing 6 and gift the hole to your opponents.





I need to play that hole again.


In all seriousness, go for it, just don't give it an accidental Lorena Bobbit.

Go for it every single time. As Bob says you could be left wondering what if. How are you going to get better if you dont put yourself under pressure to pull off the big shots ? Are you always going to pussy out of taking them on or are you going to push yourself to see how good you can get ? A chance of reaching a par 5 in 2 with no real drawbacks is an absolute must go for it situation.

I love how everyone is divided on this one. I want to just rip the 3 wood into the green but know the safe option is long iron, short wedge to pin and go for birdie putt.


What I actually did was take my 3 wood, pull it left into the trees. Took another two to get onto the green and then two putted for a 6-5 for 2 points.
