Why is it only high H/C players are called bandits and you don’t hear low players called the same.

Played yesterday in our local round up, I was playing with a young lad who plays off 6 and a lady of 28, had a great fun day and I played out of my skin.

I’m off 20 and shot a 86 (par 71)so 5 below my H/C, the lady shot to her H/C and the young lad also played out of his skin, shooting a PB 72, (5 under also) was a utter joy to watch.

So we both shot the same under but when sitting in the clubhouse after having a few drinks, whenever we were asked our score, if I said I shot 5 under I was called a bandit and told they would be watching out for me next week, but if the lad (steve) said he shot the 5 under it was all high-fives, great shooting mate, soon be of scratch etc..ect

Later on another group came in with the same kind of scores, one high player shooting below alongside a low player and that was the same, one bandit and one great score.

So why is it if a high H/C plays well he’s a bandit and but not a good player, he’s just had a good day??

I've been called a bandit when shooting the lights out playing off 4. 90% of the time its just banter, and those that are saying it are genuinely chuffed you've had a good score. I wouldn't worry about it.

To be honest I just see it as banter, when I have ever hit a good round i'm a bandit in the clubhouse and I have a high handicap.

If you chat to the good players at my place round the shop the will normally say good shooting or your in for a cut.

I shot 7 under handicap recently off 12 and had nothing but congratulations? Where is the cut off? About 12/13 or 17/18?

I suppose, not to defend the incorrect use of a description of someone who works to keep a very high handicap, that off such a handicap you are yet to prove your ability. In other words people are just jealous a peer is better than them and a clearly superior golfer has done well. Sounds like simple basic social psychology to me.

5 under doesn't qualify for banditry in my book, now 10 under or anything in the net 50s you better have your pistol ready.

I would not pay too much attention to it. But what I will say is this, low gross scores can only be congratulated referring to the person as a bandit is only fair if they are maintaining a high handicap and shooting low scores ( dunno how you do that, as someone will cut you). A low score is 3 or less over par or sub par rounds, shooting those scores is just good golf IMO.
However you played well and your handicap will be adjusted accordingly which is great motivation, so keep working on it and keep it going down.

I have waited two years after injury and pure frustration for someone to call me a bandit. After 5 lessons and a cut of 5 in the last month, it's finally happened. I love being called a bandit by the lads as they know what I have been through.

Anyone who keeps shooting 41/44pts is on the wrong h/cap, whether they're off 28 or scratch. Doing it once isn't banditry.

Think that sums it up nicely. Anyone can have a career day and shoot a silly score but if players are doing it in comps regularly, they are clearly off the wrong mark and cuts will always take time to catch up with this type of player

I think thats the one. He said something along the lines of he can turn pro when he wants as he's under a 4 handicap

Yep Dave is a bandit of the highest order LOL and the reason we will never win a comp at home when he plays

But guys you should of seen him from the Blue tees on the Brab, it was great to watch
