1st: 3 iron off the tee, only to find it in the bunker 250 yards down the fairway, up against the face! Triple (+3)
2nd: Top 3 wood (the only stinker all day!), 4 iron to 190 yards, approach to 10 ft, putt drops - Birdie (+2)
3rd: Tee shot straight at the Flag, looking good… plugged in the bunker - Double (+4)
4th: 2nd shot from the fairway right at it, only to land 20 yards short! Bogey (+5)
5th: Perfect golf tee to green 3ft for birdie … Par (+5)
At this point we had already been playing for 1.5 hours behind 3 american four balls, so we cut across to the 13th and played from the fairway. 150 yards into the teeth of the wind, 3/4 5 iron 15 yards over the back, my mate same shot, club and contact 20 yrd short! A strong chip into the bunker on the other side of the green, a chip, and 2 putts - Double (+7)
14th: play safe and short to avoid the ditch… in it! get to the green and hit the worst putt EVER!!! 4 ft left and 8 ft short from 20 ft… Double (+9)
15th: I hit a great drive, again to find it in a bunker, my mate hits a shocker… I played out of the bunker nicely first then went to look for his ball… he shouts that he has found it, and there's a ball on the other tee sitting perfectly, but about 30 yards further than it should have been… then I trip over a ball… guess who's it was!!?? I then continue to duff my perfect layup into the bunker, skull it through the back and a chip and a putt later… Double (+11) He walked off with a par!
16th: Tugged the drive a bit, if it had rolled 1" more it would have been fine… no it was sitting on a ledge 1ft above my feet!! Bogey (+12)
17th: perfect hit, wind hard off the right, ball never moved!! plugged, up against the face. Lost 2&1 Bogey (+13)
18th: a1 drive, ball ends up on a upslope, but with the ball below my feet! I hit an ok one, again in the bunker, no stance! I have a swing, hits the lip, and plugs… Double (+15)
To start with the wind was playing havoc gusting and dying so yardages were impossible, which combined with waiting for the yanks on EVERY SHOT, didn't help! But then once my mate cheated and my short game left me it was tough to take! +15 thru 11 holes!!
In the end the only thing that kept me going was that we had to walk back the same way anyway! Plus I kept saying to myself, "it's Royal Aberdeen for christ sake! Get a grip!" it could be worse…!!
Still, I am going back and will spend hours on the putting and chipping green until I learn to chip and putt again! Then, will hit the course and see what awaits!
