With all the shouting about Independence, from Scotland. How many of you know how, when and by whom. The union was started. Answer will be given in an other post later in the week for those that. Either do not know, or have the totally wrong idea.

Could be interesting to see some of the answers. Although I guess quite a few, will get it right. Maybe!

I'd love to reply, but I'm afraid I didn't understand the question. It seems that someone must have been standing over your shoulder pressing the full stop button at random intervals! :ears:

All joking apart, I don't want independence.

I'm going to guess. You are referring. To the. Treaty of union 1707? In which the English and Scottish kingdoms were joined following many failed attempts in the previous 100 years.

I believe was due to England's fear of a French invasion and the scottish joining their side and not ours. Reluctant but skins scotland signed up to the union.

Devolved power to Scotland is a nice idea for them. But look at the republic of Ireland. It's on it's ar5e.

I dont want independence either, ridiculous idea and would be a disaster for Scotland.

P.S the shouting is only coming from a few

OK I'll bite.

In the late 1600's England was a bit stretched financially because of fighting some wars ( sound familiar? )
Scotland, while not exactly thriving, was doing ok with some very good trade deals going on with the rest of the world. Some of the deals were a bit dodgy ethically, but hey ho.
So England's politicians come and tap some Scottish politicians on the shoulder.
" Hey guv. Want to buy into a bigger economy? We'll give you nearly as many seats at parliament as Cornwall ( wow!) and your own good selves will do alright out of it personally." Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
So, against the wishes of the vast majority of the population, these few Scottish politicians sign the treaty of union.
And they live happily ever after.

Darth
The percentage of Scots who want independence has stood at around the 30% mark for the best part of 60 years.
It has gone up a couple of points in recent years, mainly due to the fact that the Liberals, since they joined the Tories, are now a spent force in Scotland.
You have to remember that there is only ONE Tory MP in Scotland. If England and Wales keep electing a Tory government the Scotish people have a government that they do not want.

.

Fair point, except that percentage is I'm sure a massaged stat, as most stats are, I don't know a single person that has ever been polled about it. Doesn't mean it's not accurate but it's possible it's not as many as the pro-camp state.

If Scotland became independent I'd seriously consider moving away, I have a gut feeling the Scottish people would be robbed blind to pay for it.

I think the Scots would say good luck as they waved you away - it is a free country!

Scotland's biggest problem when voting for independence is ..... Scotland is full of ENGLISH people!!

As Gabriel remarked to God when he was dividing up the world -
'Is that not too much for any one country ... flowing rivers with salmon leaping, hills abounding with deer and game, wonderful water for the making of whisky, great earth for growing crops, gas in abundance, oil in abundance ...is this not all too much??
God replied after a wee thought ...' Gabriel if you only realised the type of neighbours I am going to put into the country south of them, you would understand why they need all this goodness!'

Darth the 30% figure is a pretty sound figure, remember it is based on 60 years of polls.
Devo Max is what most Scots want but it is a bit of a wrestle with the Westminster treasury as they know the real figures and not the Daily Mail ones.

Most Scots only live in England because of the unequal distrbution of wealth by centuries of Westminster governments.

Like me once they have taken the English shilling they return to Scotland for a better quality of life.

Haha I am not overly fussed about the Scotland great or rubbish that has appeared on this forum recently. Just found it funny you stated about a better way of living and just remembered that little fact so thought I would chuck it in there to see what reply I would get.

I just find this whole Scottish/British stuff hilarious, if youre from England Scotland Wales or Northern Ireland you are classed as British, you dont get a choice in the matter just the way it is, its like me saying I am not English I am East Angliah oooaaaa.

I do like debate but this whole Scottish thing is getting a little tedious now with how its creeping into so many different threads, but hey I suppose thats an online forum for you.
