Doing my Xmas shopping and my wife has just bought herself a Sony Alpha digital SLR as has started to get into photogrpahy.

Anyway, was looking at getting here a Gorrilla Pod as seems more flexible an option for someone starting out and more protable and easy to set up than a a regular tripod. My only concerns are whether they are as easy to use and wrap around anything and whether they are solid and stable when using one with an SLR (have only seen one attached to a normal pocket camera).

Anyone used one with a digital SLR, are they worth it or am I better off getting a regular tripod)

I dont use one myself GB but like most things , they are great when there circumstances warrent one and you can find something suitable to wrap it round. You cant beat a good quality tripod though for most times and sometimes I also take out a mono pod just to hold the camera more steady where a tripod would have trouble grounding 3 feet on an uneven surface. Personally the best tripod is where you have the holder on the camera and just snap it into the tripod when you need to - Velbon are a good quality tripod but not the most expensive.

Horses for courses!

The larger Gorilla Pods should be ok for use with a dslr but they're expensive and won't ever offer the stability of a good sturdy tripod.
The most versatile camera support I use is a small beanbag. If weight is a concern, fill it with polystyrene beads and it weighs nearly nothing.
If using a gorilla pod or tripod always use a cable release or the cameras self timer.

I agree.

They are supposed to take the weight but in my limited experience they don't grip well enough, especially on smooth surfaces.

Rather than a tripod, why not a monopod? easier to carry about.
