On the verge of giving up again

If you feel like giving up because you think you're not very good, have a few games with Smiffy, you'll soon discover that you're actually quite a good player :)

To answer a few questions, I was constantly tinkering with my swing until I found what I thought was a repeatable swing with a very key swing thought - I don't remember using that swing thought at any point last night, I think this was key to my lack of success.

My range sessions do tend to be a case of bashing balls with each club - I might just try playing a virtual 18 on the range next time I go rather than mindless bashing, that's a very good idea, thankyou.

As for being on the verge of giving up, last time I had a major melt down in similar circumstances I threw my clubs in the loft and didn't touch them for 10 years. I was in a good mind to do the same again last night , probably a poor choice of phrase but I hate being rubbish at the only sport I've ever really enjoyed.

I'd suggest stop going to the range as often unless you are actually working on something and get yourself to the course and just play for a bit.

but after hitting 50-100 balls at the range most weekends for the last 12 months and getting to the point where I can comfortably and routinely spank a bucket of balls high and straight why do I find it so utterly impossible to translate this ball striking onto the golf course !?

I would initially look at the practice you are putting in as my first guess would be that you are setting yourself up to hit the ball fat (hence the reason you don't get the ball in the air).

When you go to the range do you put the ball on the nice fluffy stuff by the automatic tee? or hit all the balls off the tee?
practice on the thinner mat as the fluffy stuff exaggerates a poorly struck shot and masks it as a good hit.

keep plugging away though, it will all come back and you will love this game again!

I agree totally with this, constant range visits and poor course play nearly made me quit for good.

Then I changed course ( more friendly and laid back ) stopped going to the range, stopped reading how to fix it, went out and relaxed and played. Got my brain thinking about where I wanted the ball to go instead of how to swing the club

The results were immediate, better golf, improved scores, winning a few Swindle comps etc etc.

The range can be a place to help but more often it makes you more frustrated

Forget the golf.

Just laugh and drop another ball down about where the previous on should be and continue to enjoy the other wonderful aspects of a round of golf!

But don't let some certain forumers see you do it as it may incite a ranting post about cheating;)

Sorry for the rant guys and girls but I don't think I've ever been at a lower point with this game, a hell of a lot of work has resulted in a standard of golf that frankly would embarrass a beginner.

It does get better doesn't it ?

Hey, Mozza73, sit down for a few minutes & listen to this ......................... more than once if required.
It kind of puts things into perspective, for me anyway ;

All the best,

How do you get to "the verge of giving up"?

If you aren't enjoying it - give up

If you are enjoying it - game on

Black & white

I agree.
Hitting hundreds of crap balls off a flat mat is definitely not golf.
A perfect lie every time,on a flat surface,to knowhere in particular.
Going onto a course, downhill lies, uphill, ball above the feet, ball below feet is a totally different game.
My suggestion is to get out there[on the course]and work it out.

Sounds too sad and pessimistic. Look forward to the good times fellow golfer. Create a fairway on the range and stick to it. Play golf on the range. Don't just wack balls. Its gonna be good when its good.

Had a real meltdown not so long ago. Got over it and even last weekend was bad but I am sticking at it. It is my hobby not my life and I am trying to enjoy the hard work I am putting in to improve and going out on the course and seeing if the fruits of my labours come off. I am just trying to enjoy the game again

These times in golf are an opportunity...

Firstly to take a break from the game and get some perspective.

Secondly when you are sitting in the bar after bringing home a PB you can look back and see where you came from and what you have achieved.

Sorry to hear about your woes. I've got two words for you TEMPO and TENSION. Sounds to me that when you are on the course you get tense. That's a swing killer on its own. This probably makes you frustrated so your tempo goes as well. Double trouble.

Get on the course and play for fun. Use a rock tee to green because you won't care if you lose it and switch it for chips and putts to get your confidence up. Use your pre shot routine to get rid of tension and keep your tempo steady. Goosefraba... :)

Have fun

Ive gone up to 6 for the first time in nearly 20 years! Lost 10 balls in 2 rounds, suddenly can't hit my driver for sweeties, can't hole a putt, have only buffered twice this year etc etc.

I love it! It's a challenge to get it back. Yesterday I played as poorly as ever. What did I take from the round? I hit 3 belting drives, hit 2 full wedges to 4 feet and got up and down 3 times in a row. Those are the shots I remember, not the several pull hooks, the chops right, or missing the green from 80 yards.positive mindset, it goes and it comes back. It's amateur golf. I still fully expect to get down to 4 this year.if I don't then heyho.its a hobby, nothing more

I'll give you £25 for the sumo hybrid.

Alternatively, stick at it. Practice important things like short game and putting, my driving has become terrible but my short game has improved and I'm scoring better than I ever have!
