As the subject says, it my first comp of the season this coming Saturday, but I'm on-call, I'd like to play, but sods laws says Ill just be getting to the furthest part of the course and my phone will ring** and I'll have to come off, taking the 0.1 for a NR. But then on the other hand if I stay at home waiting for the phone to ring, it won't and I'll kick myself for not going out.

I'd ask one of the other lads to cover for me, but it more than likely just means I'll have to return the favour on another Saturday, so nothing gained.

I guess the weather will make my mind up closer to the weekend.

**Yes I know a mobile on the course, but if I do go out, i'll have to be contactable, it will be on vibrate only in my pocket, so as no to disturb anyone.

I've done it.

I think it depends how likely you are to get called but as long as you're not in a 2 ball so that walking off doesn't impact anyone else I don't see a big problem. Obviously, phone on vibrate, warn your partners what might happen and check if they are ok with it.

Sods law the one time I played a comp when I was on call was also the only time I ever got called on that project. Fortunately, I was able to deal with it on the phone in a couple of minutes.

I've had the same dilemma a couple of times, gone for it, explained it to group (and work) and indeed was called once!

Done it often. In the early days I found it distracting, and rarely posted a decent score whilst on-call. In later years I never gave it a second thought. I guess a lot will depend on what your targeted response time is and what redundancy there is in the system.

My worst callout, and I wasn't even on-call, was when my boss rang and asked if I "was having a good weekend." "Yes great," I replied. "Have you had a beer?" "No, not at all."... 2 hours later I was in the Special Care Baby Unit in Gloucester, and worked through the night fixing a couple of incubators to take twins that were too ill to travel.

I played in December in a comp the day our warehouse roof collapsed under the weight of snow - 20, 000 washing machines damaged....

had to attend 2 conference calls at the side of the green!! Playing partners were warned beforehand, and were great about it all - laughing about the absurdity of me walking to the tee with my phone on mute, placed at the side of the tee markers then I take my drive before running off into the woods to keep out the way!!

it was my best drive of the day as well!!!

Go for it , I played when I was standby electrician [ local authority] , as we had a 2 hour response time.
If called I'd ask the controller how urgent , then decide whether to finish the round or not.

I never play in a medal when on call, too much of a distraction checking the phone every couple of holes.

I just can't ignore it either as some situations require an immediate response, depends how quickly you have to respond I suppose.

I suppose the one benefit is I don't have to check the phone, if I'm needed I'll be called.

Well first comp of the season was a none starter, shoes were on, and I'd just put the bag on the trolley, when the phone rang. I was close but had to come home to fix a very small issue.

Annoying part is it's a client side generated problem that they won't fix.

Phone rang at 15:09, 10mins to get home 2 mins to fix the problem, call my playing partner, goes to voice mail, 10mins to our tee off time, text him to let him know I'm on my way back, text him again half way there when I was stopped at traffic lights, get to the course dot on our tee off time, only to see that they must have gone off early, had they gone on off at the allotted time, I'd be heading towards the 4th green.

I suppose on the plus side, I'd not paid my comp money.

What's even more irritating now is that sods law says I won't get another call for the rest of the day.

What do you do for a job that requires on call?

I normally play on-call roulette. I'm on one week in 5. I'm a systems administrator so have to resolve network and server issues, we are a global company but luckily saturday all offices shut, sunday just dubai open (small office). We have SLA's, mainly response within an hour and resolution within 4 hours. Most of the time we will see a couple of drops in site to site connectivity but they normally come back up. I can sometimes get away with "I'm out on the course at the moment, il have a look when i get in the clubhouse".

I'm waiting for us to setup a remote client that can be used on iPad or iPhone, then i can resolve on the course ;)

Normally have my phone on silent and check before i walk on the tee, on the 3rd, 7th, 10th, 14th then 16th. If I hit 16 i'm on the home stretch and don't worry about it.
