For the most part it always seems to be single figure players who prefer medal and mid or higher handicaps prefer Stableford. For obvious reasons really - low caps are less likely to have a real blow-up hole so they don't really get the benefit of Stableford.
It's nice that you can see who's voted for which option, because it largely proves I was correct here. 40% of people have voted medal, and if you look through the last of names they're mostly single figure players or near to it (as far as my knowledge of the members here goes) with only a couple of exceptions. More of the mids and highs have voted Stableford. (y)

I don't mind medals in the summer. But in autumn and winter there are too many occasions where a ball you expect to find is lost to make it enjoyable; leaves on the course or ankle deep rough and the light just poor enough that you couldn't judge the exact area it landed.
At our place the twice monthly minor comps are medal in Spring/Summer and Stableford in Autumn/Winter. I haven't heard anyone grumble.

Reckon if there was a 3rd choice of

Don’t care either way that would be the hands down winner

Why I read through the last page or so I've no idea......as I've said before, I think I'm getting dumber with age.

And.....after being this stupid.....maybe it's NOT too early to open the beer.

I'm not entirely sure that would be the case. Let's look at it another way, you turn up on Saturday, same tees, same players, same comp (this is hypothetical so let's pretend it is possible) you can either put in a medal card or a stableford card. Which one would you do? People won't be stood there for 10 minutes unable to make a choice, they will know their preference.

Think at the end of the day for most people all they care about is playing a game of golf

They don’t really mind which ever format as long as they are just out hitting a ball

Yes, it seems to mainly be an English thing.

Not sure I like the idea of a “safety net” having a real bad hole and still being in it. Doesn’t really incentivise trying to not mess up a hole too badly.

Just opinion mind.
I dont think you are ever "still in" a stableford comp if you have a really bad hole....you very rarely hear someone say they got 40+ points with a blob.

To still compete in a stableford comp you really have to score on every hole.

If there was a groan-o-meter at courses, they would pick up a lot of of noise on medal day at all of the clubs I've ever been a member at :ROFLMAO: . Most people don't check the format, they just want their game on a Saturday. They get their card, check in at the terminal or pro shop........'awwww no. Ah well'. Time and time again......

This is absolutely untrue.

The last Stableford at my club was won by 41 points with one blob. The Stableford winner prior to that was also 41 points, one blob. The November Remembrance Stableford was won with 42 points.. two blobs.

Yeah, seen too many instances that would argue against that.

Being able to take a 10 on a par 4 (no shot) and treat it the same as a 6 on the same hole for the same "score" of zero points means you aren't really impacted by those 4 extra shots. Go on to get a couple of net birdies and you're right back in it. Net birdies do little for you in medal play, you need the real deal to reduce that deficit.
