On a Day by Day basis which would you rather play?

Stableford or Medal

  • Stableford

  • Medal

Results are only viewable after voting.
On a more serious note, why is it not possible to preview the results of the poll without having to vote?

I'd like to see the results but have no firm preference in the choices, if I vote purely to see the result I'll be skewing the percentages.

(I'm voting for the first option purely to see the result)
Sorry Nick, no special reason but it wasn't an option I went for, nor the being able to change your vote.
As expected Stableford has lead the way the whole time, even with having several Scots voting.

😂😂 Hang on, some have said they prefer Match Play but it wasn’t an option, so that must be a fun, novelty format as it can be played over just 10 holes.
It would be a fun novelty format for anyone who believes it is a fun novelty format.
I doubt there are many that believe it to be so.
Do a poll?

I believe stableford is a fun novelty format - which could explain why I play in them.
Medal is better - and much simpler - just count all your strokes - Best net wins.

Here's a not very interesting anecdote.

Played in a seniors betterball open a couple of years ago at the course where my nextdoor neighbour and Doublebogey7 are members.
I partnered my neighbour and Doublebogey7 had Crow as his.
On about the 6th or 7th hole, I mentioned something about "3 points for that". Doublebogey7 said, "Its a medal."
I had assumed it was a stableford and hadn't bothered to ask. Made a little mess of their card, but quickly corrected everything. Felt a bit silly, though.

I've not played a betterball medal since. I think the last time I played a 2-from-4 AmAm that was a medal was in the 1990s.
In both betterball and AmAm, I find scoring the card easier if it is a medal.

I play in the regular rollup at Ripon....I really get tired of the same 2 to count of 4. Same old thing. A few months ago I punched through a 3 of 4 to count and the high handicappers went crazy. I probably won't try that again. Although....various versions of playing are great....don't do the same thing every week. I don't like the Waltz bit....but at least it's different. I kind of like the 2 of 4 on the first 6 and then 3 of 4 and then (horrors!!) all 4 to count!! I'm an instigator.

I admit that I assumed it was essentially to be about competitive golf.
Medal and Stableford are competition formats.
Indeed, though my preference would remain medal scoring…as in at the end of the round I add up my shots on every hole and that would tell me where my game is with no smoothing of my ego on the occasions of disasters. The number will be there staring me in the face.👍😊

Therein lies the problems with statistics, they are only as good as the question(s) asked.
And only as good as the meaning, understanding or misunderstanding (deliberate or otherwise) that the reader takes from the question…and in that I may well have misunderstood the question…or the question may have been ambiguous.🙄

At football? 😁😁

hopefully all meant in fun
By "football"....do you mean the sport where they actually use their feet?....or the sport where they try to ruin people's knees?. Yeah...as an American I've never understood the football name for American football. But then again.....I keep calling the pavement a sidewalk....because, you know....it's a sidewalk.

There are a tiny few Brits (I'm not one of them) who call a sidewalk a footpath or pedestrian path. To them a pavement is any paved area - could be the whole street if it is all paved.

The rules

Previously we would put your score and + - or 0 on the scorecard and the computer would work it out, now, we are told to putt out and enter the score.

So previously a - was treated as a nett double bogey.

So if you are playing for example, a Par 4 and not receiving a shot, you are on the green for 2, so 2 putts for a halve or 1 for a win, the mindset was matchplay, now it’s the same for 1st & 2nd putt, but instead of picking up if you miss the Par, putt out for a bogey, despite this making no difference to your score!

Playing last year was a mess, some picked up once they lost the hole, some putted out as if it was a Stableford comp.

From a previous thread:

Under UHS, par/bogey format scores were directly converted to nett differentials.

I am still confused over why you are being told to putt out. We occasionally post this reminder:

"Stableford and Bogey – be aware of the point where you can no longer score a Stableford point or achieve a “half” in a Bogey. You should also be aware that your Competition Handicap may be 1 or even 2 shots lower than you Course Handicap so be careful not to pick up too early as WHS handicap calculations are based on Course Handicaps."

That is not telling players that they must putt out.

There's a bogey comp at our place which is still qualifying for handicap, so you have to putt out otherwise your score differential could be several shots higher than it should be.
