18 holes
6 easy pins
6 medium pins
6 hard pins
Attack the easy and some medium pins but leave the hard pins alone.

99.9999% of people that play the game at the club level will just be looking to get on the green

Attacking pins etc etc that’s elite amateur or pro

Most will concentrate on hitting it straight first

In friendly games with your mates/colleagues

Don't agree, people would still enter but have nett side bets with their mates/colleagues.

I would never take up a new sport and expect to start winning big prizes within 6 months.
They absolutely would not enter. Why would I want to fund someone else with zero chance of winning myself? Heck, I have no interest in funding our club team, never mind the low h/c every weekend.

I don't do side bets, none of my PP do either.

People would play but not enter the comp, simple as. I, and others, did this earlier in the winter when the club briefly kept the course at full yellow tee length, 6,400yds, with no run, cold temps etc. They changed the tees within 2 weekends as comp entries fell off a cliff.

Eh? Why would a 25 handicapper be entering competitions if there were only gross prizes? He'd just be throwing money away.

Scratch Golfer goes out to play in a Stableford Comp, plays to 3 under and scores 20pts on the front 9 and 19 on the back.
Same Comp has a 28 handicapper who also plays to 3 under scoring 19 points on the front 9 and 20 coming in.

28 Handicapper wins on countback, what a wonderful, fair system we have that has created a Level playing field for all levels of Golfer.

Both guys laugh and enjoy a pint together in the Clubhouse.😉

It's ultimately the point of handicapping, isn't it? (y)

As usual this sort of discussion drifts off track - the question was about my preference as an individual about the golf scoring format, medal or stableford, I’d rather play day-to-day. I chose medal as I believe my gross score on every hole tells ME more about MY game than a stableford total that, on a hole-by-hole basis can hide a multitude of sins. In answering that basic question I have no interest in what others are doing and scoring - my gross on every hole does not lie - and nobody else can be mistaken.

I was just sitting here wasting a few seconds and was trying to think of a bunch of arguments on here that people insist they know the correct answer to....but there really isn't any definitive answer one way or another....

1. Flag in or out
2. Medal or Stableford
3. Blade putter or mallet
4. WHS or old way
5. Handicap or not....or where to make the different cuttoffs.....0-10, 11-20 etc

There are more of course.....

That sounds worthy of a thread of its own. I suspect it might have to be locked within a day or two though 😄

Don't worry, I have indicated the correct answers here to save us time. ;)

Great idea:

6. Cap on or off Indoor
7. Knee length socks yes or no
8. White socks with shorts.

😬

I didn't say that, you did, and since when did comps only have one prize?
This is what is said

That is the point of the handicaps - so that we can compete alongside each other

If the prize only went to whoever scored the best then comps would die away

To which you replied

So if there is just one prize for the best golf is that not a gross prize which is the best golf and thereby removing all other prizes

No need to patronise me, I know what I said.

But I will repeat, since when did comps only have one prize?

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

they don’t - the post was saying

“IF” there was only a prize for the best golf then comps would die

You claimed they wouldn’t because people would have side bets etc - which they won’t and doesn’t happen in comps

Not necessarily, the best golf could be best gross, best net score, most s/ford points.
And if the s/ford has no gross prize, who plays the best golf?

tbf, everyone loves a side bet in our comps, but thats more that each fourball plays a 4bbb at the same time. I dont imagine thats standard across clubs.
