Stableford or Medal

But in both Comps you are trying your best and for Handicap purposes that 8 will become a 7 or a 6, also depending on when that bad hole happens you hope you can get it back.
Exactly why I’d prefer medal…with stableford my major blunders are hidden. It matters not whether I score a 12 or an 8. If I end up with 36 pts I can tell myself that I ‘played to my handicap’ and feel pleased with myself, when in fact I am deluded and deceiving myself about my golf. That’s fine if I want to pretend that I’m better than I actually am - but not for me (though I admit that sometimes I do 🙄)

A 20-handicpper goes round in 16-over.

A 12-handicapper goes round in 10-over but drops 7 shots on two holes.
He beats the 20-handicapper whose net score was better than his and gets his name on the trophy.

The 20-handicapper decides that he doesn't like stableford.

Its a fun novelty format to be enjoyed, but most comps should have the best golf score as the winner.

Then what’s the point in handicaps

I’m confused!
If it’s a Stableford Comp the 20 handicapper will have 40 points, the 12 handicapper will have 38 points.

If it’s Stroke the 20 handicapper is 4 under and the 12 handicapper 2 under.

What is the format and why would the 20 handicapper not like Stableford?
Going to need to see his workings out on a separate sheet of paper,🤣

But you actually would have played to handicap, since handicap rounds are recorded broadly the same as Stableford aren't they? i.e. bad holes rounded down. So you'd be correct in saying you'd played to handicap. 😁

That’s only for handicap purposes though! If you score a 12 in a medal it’ll be shown on the results, the only pat on the back you could feel is that you never gave up, you’d still be 7/8/9 over Par on that hole and that is no different in a Stab comp if a person decides not to pick up.🤷‍♂️

The 12 handicapper was 3-over on 16 holes getting 12 shots. 9 points better than level 2s. 32 + 9 = 41. (The two holes he dropped 7 shots on were not shot-holes)

😂😂 Brilliant, you’ve got him scoring 5 points on 3 holes! You’ve counted twice!😂😂😂

So not only did we not know the Par or SI or which holes he dropped the shots on, I still think you’re wrong!

On 13 holes he gets 2 points = 26 points.

On 3 holes he gets 3 points = 9 points

I make that 35 points.

Anyone else want to make something up

…and on this..I am looking at 36pts and thinking I played just fine…and my golf is all round tidy…when in fact on one or more holes I could have been in the middle of a mega shambles in some aspects of my play e.g. getting out of a bunker… but I picked up as soon as I couldn’t score a pt.

I know that for handicap purposes it rather doesn’t matter..but I’m not actually talking about handicap…I’m thinking about being honest about ‘weaknesses’ in my game. I may have a handicap of 7-8 at the moment, but I know that that is despite a load of weaknesses. And I want to be honest about my game, for if I am not honest about my failings I can easily deny them - and in denial I will never work on them…very much like life really 🙄

I'm not going to be one of those annoying people who picks a format that wasn't in the question, even though neither of these two options are my favourite...

If the choice is a straight one between medal and stableford, I'm choosing stableford. If I have an 8 or 9 on the second hole, it doesn't destroy my whole round. However, stableford is just for fun and to keep inconsistent golfers (like me) interested. Board competitions should reward consistency so they should be (mainly) medal.

I was told that the handicap system was used so people could play with their neighbour/friend/work colleague/boss etc and have a competitive game, no matter what their abilities.

That is the point of the handicaps - so that we can compete alongside each other

If the prize only went to whoever scored the best then comps would die away

But that’s your mindset! You could look at 36pts and think, it would of been 40 if I hadn’t of blobbed 2 holes.

In medal you could still pick up, score well on 16 holes and think exactly the same,

Both cards may show level for handicap purposes only.

Its also possible to have a stinker or 2 and still post a good net score , have done it several times.

But how are you? 36 points is a good round whatever way you look at it. I'm looking at this the reverse way to you - why beat yourself up over one bad hole ruining the round? Stableford actually gives you a better outlook and a more healthy attitude about how you played. You call it delusion, I say you played a fantastic round for 17 out of 18 holes.

Apologies…I edited my post to expand on my thinking…😊

Medal can be especially punishing when you lose a ball unexpectedly as well. When your options are, do a 200 yard walk to hit again and hold up the entire field, or cancel your round altogether.
