I stopped my Dad smoking entirely accidently. There used to be some small, tobacco coloured, 'spills' (about a 1/4 inch long) that you could put into the end of a cigarette - they were sold in joke shops. I did it to my Dad and the cigarette tasted so foul he never smoked another.

I found determination was key.. Really wanting to give them up..

Also trying to keep your mind busy i found helped me..

However i did often wonder if you gave up for a 6 months and still wanted one if you were to buy a packet of 20 a smoke them one after another till the 20 were gone would that possibly sicken you off them again? i had that in mind but lucky for me the above actions stopped me from smoking..

I gave up on 22nd of dec 2006.. i did try and smoke another one about 2/3 years after that date and did not enjoy it at all.. however this might not be the case for everyone but i guess you need to try and find whats best for you..

Just dont give up each idea because its hard, key is having the mind set of giving up thats what you need to focus on!!

best of luck. you will need it.

Seems that we have two main themes here.

Those who just gave up and found it (relatively) easy and just did it, and those who will always struggle because they have been indoctrinated about how hard it is supposed to be.

Have you noticed the current campaign to help you give up. Consult your GP etc. Who's sponsering it? The drug companies of course. Want to give up smoking? Fine, no problem. Here, have some nicotine patches that you can become addicted to.

What! Leftie a cynic? Nah :D

Champix prescribed courtesy of local stop smoking drop in clinic, Fortunately the lady who runs it needed her boiler fixing and we got chatting as I did it for her. Most rewarding boiler repair I've ever done!

It is very tough. Good luck with it. I really wanted to quit a couple of years ago. I used patches which were great to get me through the initial 3 weeks. I managed to stay off them for 12 months then started up again.

Going to try again at new year with the patches once more. They definitely deal with the physical cravings.
