Old Arnold Palmer Putter

Today I used my old A.P.Putter to good effect ,not used it for a long time, the grip is the original one and is as smooth as the proverbial baby's bot---,I don't think its the usage that as made it that smooth can anyone tell me if the old putter had smooth grips on them, or should I be investing in a new grip?

Lovely putter, I used to have one.
If I remember correctly they used to be worth a bob or two as modern antiques.
Check that out before changing the grip.
