Golf really is a cruel sport. Even in success you think about what could have been.

I had a lesson tonight then got nine holes in. Four pars, five bogeys and I've come back with my best back nine ever of 39. I should be ecstatic, but instead I'm thinking about the two missed short putts and the easily makeable up-and-down that cost me a serious 'oh my god' score of +2 through 9.

Now I'm sure 39 was a fair score given I did hole a couple of longer putts for bogey plus flirting with two hazards on the 18th where you'd say I got away with a couple, but your brain just doesn't work that way.

On the plus side, it's not bad form to shoot 21 points on the back nine. Just have to keep it going for a full 18 at the next comp.

I'm currently suffering from a torn subscapularis (sits just behind the shoulder blade) and shouldn't be playing golf at all because the muscle is apparently engaged in all inward turning movement (i.e. the entire golf swing!).

Still........when I tank myself up with 7/800mg of ibuprofen I can just about play occasionally!! :D

Yesterday I shot a gross score of 97 like this which is pretty mediocre, let's face it. Before I injured myself I was dropping in handicap rapidly from a starting point of 24. The gross 97 included a 2 triple bogeys, a quadruple bogey and (wince) a quintuple bogey. They were towards the end of the round when I just couldn't swing any more really but wanted to finish.

Taking those out of the equation and making them bogies, which is a pretty standard score of mine for those particular holes - not within the realms of fantasy, I would have scored a gross 86 which is absolutely mental for me. Even if they were double bogies it would have been a gross 90.

So although I would have played a lot better if I wasn't attempting to play through a nasty injury against doctors' advice, I was pretty chuffed!

Guess it's swings and roundabouts.

I just went out and played 18 holes on my own and equalled my PB of 74 (+4). Not played that well all year. I have decided however that I'm not going to dwell on what could have been and that whatever I shoot is what I deserved to shoot, no what ifs.

I'd enjoy the fact you shot a PB (and Hawkeye equalled his). It's not often we get anything from this fickle game so enjoy the good days and don't dwell on the what ifs

31 pts today, back 9 of 47. Yep, I'm with you. Enjoy the good days and don't think 'what if?'. They don't come around too often.
