Oh Rory....

any Sportsman breaking or throwing his equipment due to his own poor performance just looks childish and frankly pathetic. Can we understand his frustration and have we all considered doing the same thing or even actually done it? Certainly. Does it make it any less childish and pathetic? Nope.

Hopefully, unlike some on here, he will recognise it as poor behaviour and try to do better next time he feels the frustration boiling over.

Agree with this sentiment totally. I had to take out the I like Rory bit, because I can't stand him and its for these type of antics which I said i'd had the misfortune to see him do several times at live events and other televised events. Was told by many on here he doesn't do that type of thing but here was the proof at a major.

He needs to sort his head out and pick himself up.

Of course it's childish and petulant but does it really matter in the grand scale of life. Big deal, the young fella lashed out, not the first and most certainly not the last.

I can't believe the amount of hand-wringing over this. Somebody called it 'indefensible'. Really??

The boy was having a bad day. Alright, in an ideal world he wouldn't have done it and you'd hope he doesn't make a habit of it but all he did was bend a club a little bit. It's not like he helicoptered it into the gallery. All this guff about Nike execs, even if it's true (which I seriously doubt), why does anyone care? What difference does it make to any of us, unless someone on here IS a Nike exec, what Nike's view of this is?

Of all the things in the world to get upset about...

Re: Rory's just bent his club

Obviously Rory is not happy and it is a two way street between McIlroy and Nike.
Mcilroy is hungry to win championships and Nike want a champion in McIlroy.

I'm not condoning what he did and hope kids do not interpret his behaviour as acceptable (imagine the damage to their parent's wallet!) but Nike has now been given a clear message that Rory is not happy with his equipment and they need to change it again.

I wonder how many times Rory has protested about his clubs and how many times Nike has told him he needs time to get used to them.

Re: Rory's just bent his club

If he would have used the club again, would he have penalty shots added for "changing the characteristics of his club".;)

Re: Rory's just bent his club

Don't really see a problem with it myself. He was frustrated and angry and he had a bit of a wobbler. Would I be disappointed if my kids did it? Probably, but if they were in Rory's situation then I would understand completely.

As to it showing a character flaw, then I'll hold my tongue on that front, bearing in mind that I'm not perfect and have plenty of character flaws myself. Obviously, if you're perfect then feel free to criticize the young man......

Re: Rory's just bent his club

Something I don't really understand about the Rory/Nike deal. Obviously Rory is struggling with something, it may or may not be the clubs, if it is the clubs, would this not have been obvious when he would a doubtlessly been fitted to millimeter for them? And if it they are such a big problem, what is stopping Nike custom making essentially copies of his old Titliest setup? Surely the job of sponsor it to help their pro become as successful as possible?

If it is not the clubs, could it be the pressure that comes with 100 million (upwards of contract). I am sure that knowing that someone has invested that much money adds it own pressure. I know that I have recently had a payrise a work (I know its not really comparable) but I know feel I have to proof I am worth that extra money. Could this add pressure be the cause of his poor form at the moment?

Just to be clear are you suggesting that nobody can ever criticise someone else for anything unless that person is perfect?

I cant see why some people are being so precious about it being discussed. Its a talking point about the world number 2 who has been the subject of a lot discussion since his switch to Nike that happened on the final Sunday of a major chamionship. Heaven forbid golfers on a golf forum should discuss the actions of a golfer whilst on a golf course involving his new golf equipment. Whatever next, a "which ball should I use?" Thread?

Re: Rory's just bent his club

Oops - started something here! I didn't think what he did was great although don't really fall into the "he must be perfect as he's a role model" - surely parents are responsible for how their kids behave NOT some sportsman they'll never actually meet...

Played 36 holes on Sat with a player who was doing ok. Scruffing it around a bit and not playing to handicap but not hitting a cricket score either. Talk about slumped shoulders and "woe is me" constantly - would have preferred a bit of club chucking or trolley wheel kicking (my speciality) than that to be fair.

Re: Rory's just bent his club

I've never gone into trashing clubs or throwing them into trees etc, mainly because I'm too tight to be willing to pay for replacements.
But if a playing partners gets upset and makes a scene by chucking his clubs I'll gladly just carry on playing and probably laugh at him.
It's not the end of the world now is it?

As for being an ambassador and role model, I've said it many times re: Tiger, he's a golfer out there to make money and win tournaments. He isn't a role model to kids, parents/grandparents should be the role models.

Feel free to disagree with what he did, I disagree with it. But stating that he is somehow a poor role model with character flaws is ridiculous. Not one person on this thread understands what he is going through. It may not be as serious as problems that people on this forum have experienced in the past, or are experiencing right now, but it's obvious that he's having some sort of problem. I think that a little bit of understanding would be a whole lot better than a lot of mud throwing.

If it was a one off incident in the current circumstances id agree but doesn't he have previous for other poorly judged actions or comments? Dont get me wrong I like Rory but that doesn't mean he should be immune from criticism.

All he did was bend a club but its a perfectly valid discussion point for forumers in my humble opinion.

Discussion is fine, but there are some fairly insulting words being bandied about on this thread. Immature, Childish, Pathetic, character flawed, Petulant etc etc. He bent a club in a fit of frustration. It's hardly the worst "character flaw" I've seen. It's not even the worst I've seen today......

As an aside, my kids love Rory and only watch golf when he plays (and to a lesser degree Luke Donald). I would have no hesitation in letting them watch Rory play. If he did this again, I would explain why it was wrong. I am their primary role model, not some sportsman they will never meet. If they picked up bad habits, then that would be my fault, not some Sportsman/Celebrity/Reality wanabee..........

Call sean foley @ 351 376645303 and put the time in, concentrate you have the skills. This situation is getting ridiculous!

Re: Rory's just bent his club

Nick Faldo was right.
He questioned Rorys decision to change clubs.
Imo Rory has been petulant.
Imagine Lewis Hamilton getting out of his Mercedes and booting it,because it was not
as good as the old McLaren.[That won him the world championship],not the piece
of rubbish jensons driving now.
