Office debate - Golf shorts

There are far more working class people playing the game now.

Yes, and doesn't it make one want to vomit?
There should be one big municipal course somewhere (preferably up North) where all the working class hoi polloi could naff off and play in their jeans and t-shirts, use their chippers, and wear shorts if they want.
There is no place in the modern game for riff raff.

What is the problem with wearing shorts on the golf course? Trousers would be hell on some days.

To me if someone dosn't dress to play golf they do not want to play golf, simple as that. I have refused to play with people who have turned up in shorts and always will thats why I said it because it is true.
If you made it to the final of your club matchplay competition and your opponent turned up wearing shorts, would you forfeit the match rather than play with him?

I do rather wonder where Freddie actually plays his golf. I assume that he does not belong to a club where shorts are allowed - if he does I don't think that he will last long with his pompous attitude. Can you imagine in a monthly medal or competition being drawn against (say) a committee member and then refusing to play because his opponent was wearing shorts.

Come on Freddie. Lighten up and grow up. Just because you don't like others wearing shorts for golf doesn't lessen their love of the game, their seriousness about the game or make them bad people.

I am a keen cricketer and sometimes play in extremly hot conditions, but of course always play in cricket whites with my shirt neatly tucked in. When coaching the colts at my club I recommend that they also wear the same as your appearence is the first thing the opposition sees and immediatly can give you an advantage (or disadvantage) depending on your appearence.

In cricket you have to run around, unlike golf, and games can last for sometimes 6 hours, yet you never hear people complain about not being able to wear shorts etc.

I think that people should wear what they want on the course when it comes down to shorts, but I believe that any immediate advantage that they would have on the first tee is lost.

Stop talking nonsense . What advantage do I give you if I look like a dogs dinner? Would you feel intimidated if I had a full wardrobe courtesy of Johan Lindeberg? No of course you wouldn't, you'd make the assumption that I've too much money and will play like a halloween!

Okay, okay. Perhaps I should take this opportunity to clarify my position...

The idea of shorts on the course I don't mind. There's no reason why it shouldn't work but... somehow it doesn't.

If you usually sport a black golf shoe, these are not going to look good with white shorts. Some blokes opt for a black sock and white shoes - also a no, no. Combat shorts, no. Knee length socks, no. Football shorts, oh dear.

Basically, the point is that by letting men wear shorts you are opening a Pandora's Box of fashion disasters.

My message to the forum is this: keep it simple people, stick to what you know, wear chinos.

Thank you.

Chinos? ROFLMAO

I'd rather walk about in my boxers.

There are far more working class people playing the game now. It is not an eliteist sport anymore although sometimes I do wonder.

That might be the case where you are, but in Scotland golf has always been a game for the masses (Including Working Class)with only a few "Elitist" clubs.

so how many of us only have one pair of shoes, or all of the same colour. well we know of some shoe tarts don't we?

summer is white shoes, white socks and shorts.

and as for not playing with someone because they don't meet your personal dress code, do they also have to have the right make of club, ball and bag - and that in a non-offensive colour? too sad

I wear Shorts, I do not see a problem with others wearing shorts....To say they are not taking the game seriously if they wear shorts is pretty ignorant.

Tailored Chino Shorts only, plain colours, no patterns, I pay my Subs, I chose my gear, not any one else, I will wear what I like, if you don't like that, good luck explaining yourself to the Commitee, when you have walked of the 1st Tee on the Monthly Medal, Month Ban for that alone.

Check out some of my Gear below :)

Plain White Trousers. Incase I have to wear Knee length Socks, no no for me.

Me just enjoying this great game.

For the comment, the Pro's don't wear them, well a few years back Garcia made it public, he wanted to wear Shorts. I have watched plenty of Pro's on the Golf Channel wearing Shorts on A Round with the Pro.

As Tappas said, its not the Shorts, its what you wear with them.

I think we need Harry Hill to settle this one fella's? :D

On one hand, hairy legged men in shorts(who can sometimes alarm elderly women when they squat to place their balls on the putting surface), or men in trousers, keeping their balls only for putting...........

Theres only one way to find out?.......FIGHT! :D :D

Wow, "can o worms" this one

Got a couple of fellas in our society who like the old shorts. They are tailored shorts but they still look like toffee apples with their bandy legs sticking out ;)

With my legs, I praise the lord for lightweight cotton trousers for the summer months :o

Lets be honest fellas, we don’t get to much sun to worry about it. Please though, no tracksuits or denims. You got to draw the line somewhere

No problem with anyone wearing shorts.

I occassionally wear shorts--we dont get enough good weather over here to wear them every weekend during the "Summer Months."

If your legs are as good as mine, why not!

Tailored shorts are fine.
I wear them with the trainer sock.

TBH if someone didn't want to play golf with me because I had shorts on. I wouldn't want to play with them anyway. Would also be tempted to stick the "heed" on.
What a stupid thing to say. By all means, have an opinion and don't like them, but, to come out with a statement like that......

I'll stop now before I go off on one.

How very overly aggresive - To me if someone dosn't dress to play golf they do not want to play golf, simple as that. I have refused to play with people who have turned up in shorts and always will thats why I said it because it is true.
He may be coming over overly aggressive, you however are coming over as a pompous prick.

For someone to claim that he's not a 'thug'. You sure speak the language of one. What was it you said?

Better to be thought as one than confirm it.

:D

Back to the OP though.

I really don't mind if you want to wear shorts. Yes you may look silly in them, but that is your choice. Why should it bother me. Some men can 'pull it off' so to speak and others can't. I can't, so therefore I don't. But if I wanted to I could. But won't! Makes sense. I think!

The human male leg is not designed to be seen in public places - not under any circumstance, nor anywhere.

However, I shall not question your right to wear shorts, but you, on the other hand, shall not question my right to snigger at your legs. There - we should all get on fine.... :D
